Would appreciate advices on best printer for home use (daughter) ....one that is economic for replacement cartridges....have made several wrong choices in the past so dont want to go in blind again...

Guess on your list of "not to haves" is "Lexmark" couple of replacement black cartridges and a colour and I paid out more than the printer. Going to watch this thread with interest. Thanks for the question. I know there is always "Which" or "What Printer" but in-use feedback is best.

At the budget end the most economical way to work is to buy whatever printer is on special offer, run it till the cartridges are empty, then chuck it away and do the same again. You can typically buy a new printer with a set of cartridges for less than the cost of a set of cartridges on its own - crazy but true.

7dayshop (www.7dayshop.com) are the cheapest I've found for Canon cartridges - you don't pay any VAT as they are based in the Channel Islands.

I pay very little for my cartridges for my home printer ... about £2 for black and the same for the colour one. Admittedly the cartridges are non genuine but they are guaranteed to be as good or your money back.

My printer is a Canon IP2000 (cheap too).

Unless colour is an absolute must then nothing will beat a cheap laser in terms of running costs, especially for infrequent use when ink cartridges keep gunking up and the printer spends most of the ink going through endless cleaning cycles.

I always use EPSON inkjet the one I have at the moment (had it for 5 years with not one problem) is Epson Stylus Photo R200 I bought it off Ebay new with full Epson warranty.
I always use Epson compatible inks which are cheap also from Ebay and never had a problem, you can't buy this model now because it has been replaced with a newer model.

Another vote for Epson from me just bought a SX 205 from currys in January £39.99 Cartridges are 3 colour + 1 Black a set of non genuine but good quality off e bay £6.99 thats £1.75 each and they last ages printer is in constant use with my duaghters school work and its also a scanner and copier as well, great value in my book.

Not Lexmark is my cry here also. I'm a Canon fan for home inkjet use, heads seem less prone to clogging than Epson ones. Can't go wrong with HP either but running costs can be scary on them too.

Does your daughter need a colour printer or is black and white okay. I don't print colour and user a budget laser printer, its done me proud for 5 years and still is on its original cartridge.

I use a Samsung colour laser printer. The prices on colour lasers are pretty reasonable now. Keep away from Lexmark.

I bought one of these second hand. Black and white only but prints really clearly and the toner lasts forever (almost). Also handy as a photocopier and can be networked although I never worked out how :o

It should have an RJ45 connection already there.
On your pc set a local port with an appropriate IP addy, load the same IP addy into the device using 'user tools/network settings'.
Load the printer driver you download from the Ricoh website, attach it to the port, configure the device settings and voilla.

We have a couple of HP/Scanner copiers. Oldest one must be getting on 8 years old, no troubles (fingers now crossed). Original cartridges can be scary, but can be picked up on ebay at 50% less. Recommended

I have several printers, all HP, the oldest is an 1100 laserjet, about eights years old I think, if you could pick one of these up on ebay I think you'd have a very sound machine.

HP TBH. After owning a colour laser printer though for the last few years, would not go back to inkjet.

Watch out for 'starter' cartridges both in inkjets and lasers.

HP supply one of their photo printers with cartridges rated at just 10 prints.

Samsung tend to put out laser printers with cartridges that have half or less of the normal replacement cartridge capacity. I doubt that the other cheap lasers from other manufacturers are any different.

Separate colour cartidges sound like a good idea. The cartidges may be cheaper and they claim that if you use lots of one colour you don't end up discarding a cartridge with ink remaining from other colours. Well yes. But if you look at HP's 6 ink Vivera cartridges you might notice each colour cartridge has a different amount of ink. That kind of shifts the goalposts yet again - probably not in your favour.

So if buying a cheap inkjet it's usually better to go for a discounted mid-upper market one. It's more likely to come with a decent set of cartridges to start.

get any cheap epson

ive had them for years

currently got a SX200 and its ipod black, works perfectly as a printer, scanner and even fax i think

cartridges are cheap as chips on ebay (£13 for 10)

keep an eye on http://www.hotukdeals.com/all/deals/new for deals

ebay.co.uk
argos

and see who does the best deal

After running a mono Xerox laser printer for many years, I 'upgraded' to a Xerox colour laser printer - and would strongly recommend the same to others.

One statistic on the web indicates that if you were able to buy inkjet printer ink by the gallon, it would cost a staggering $10,000.

Even so, I purchase my Xerox printers from Printware - and they have a good deal on the following Xerox colour laser printer with a free (additional) toner pack, and with free delivery...
