Can anyone advise on the best way to check ATF on a W203 that has no dipstick. Any other way of checking without Mercedes workshop tool. Does the engine have to be hot or cold, engine running (in gear or neutral or park) or switched off. If anyone can answer questions and/or suggest alternative method of checking ATF I would be much obliged.

You need a dipstick. You can get one on e-bay for about six quid.

Advice varies here: But I was told. Engine on - Car in Neutral - Normal running temp.

A friendly indie may dip it for you.

The surefire way to do this is to purchase a dipstick on Ebay they are not too expensive. Mercedes benz automatic transmission dipstick tool | eBay Usually done with the fluid hot= operating temperature [ but dipstick has cold markings also] You can either measure the temperature with a thermocouple probe or one of these infrared remote temp sensors will work just as well. Failing that just drive the car for about 10 miles to warm everything up to operating temperature and then measure. Should add normally the engine should be running and its an idea to cycle the gear box selector through all its positions to circulate the fluid through all the galleries.

Agree completely ... except that "Engine MUST be running"
Otherwise you get a completely incorrect reading.
