Beware: eBay fraud combined with armed robbery

A woman was robbed in my nearest city recently, she had £25k cash in her handbag and the muggers had travelled from Birmingham, 150 miles or more.

Drug deal set up were my thoughts.

Awful though the expepriemce must have been it should have been fairly obvious it was some sort of scam as the car was being "sold" for under half the correct prioce?

I’m probably in the minority but I firmly believe in an ‘eye for an eye’ and I would gladly serve time to achieve such.

So these things also happen in the UK although Big Brother is watching and recording every step you take?
It's a tragic thing for the people who got attacked, this is a trauma that will probably never completely heal?

You would think that between viewing CCTV footage along the VAN's route, tracing mobile phone calls and triangulation, and collecting DNA evidence, these crimes would have longed been solved.

But the sad reality is that the majority of unsolved crime is simply due to the police not prioritising the allocation of CID resources.

These are usually reserved for anti-terrorism, murders, and more recently (and bizarrely) to historic sex offences allegations.

Awful and yet another reason I never deal in cash - would not like anyone knowing if I have a large sum on me.

I really do wonder what type of "innocent" private individual wanders around with such amounts of cash.

My cynical side suggests those that do not declare their earnings or are involved in a life of crime.

I have some sympathy for the people but surely in this day and age why would you (ie private individual) try to deal in cash with an unknown person.

Personally, I still love to deal in cash but you really do have to weigh up the risk versus reward.

£9,000 for a 2018 A-Class should get alarm bells going, but still there's no way they could see this coming. What a horrific experience.

It's the old "If it seems to good to be true..." adage isn't it.

Even if they get caught, they are unlikely to see their money back and nor will the perpetrators get a proper sentence anyway.

Easy - ebay seller says he will only take cash - as it’s such a ‘good deal’ you’re persuaded to oblige. You visit the bank and withdraw the money.

But still damned foolish.

Or , once you see the car , you accompany the vendor to the nearest bank and , by prior arrangement , withdraw the cash inside the bank and do the exchange of keys etc there .

I've done this before with an £18k car except the guy brought cash with him rather than drawing it out there (which I suggested) but then he brought a lot of people with him.

We took the keys, V5 etc. with us and both went into the bank.

He paid the cash in including some duds which had to be replaced by him and then we sat down and did the paperwork and he left with the keys.

I figured this would weed out any chancers as they wouldn't want their face(s) on the kind of calibre of CCTV I imagine a bank would have!

He also had an SL55 which sounded amazing and started me on the path to that 5439cc V8...

So it was good you did the transaction in the bank. Did the bank keep the duds.

Yes, my thoughts too. Only 3 x 20s were dud but that's still £60 I'd have lost out on had I taken the cash.

Yeah, he requested them back but they declined stating they were not allowed to give out duds!

He wasn't happy at all but fair enough I thought.
