Big Decision Time - Selling my E55K Wagon!

haha, yeah Dave I don't think I've done more than 500 miles this year in the car!!

I try and do at least one Euro trip a year but this year due to many reasons I missed out. A trip with like minded people is a good way to get back into the spirit of AMG :)

You mean like lost somewhere in southern Germany, its dark, wearing sunglasses, following a black on black CLS, driving like he stole it:D:D

Simon's shed is alright i suppose, but what do you get after its gone??

Like me, sell a 55, buy a V12 , then return back to a 55, sat here with a smug grin thinking of my green credentials:D.

You know it ;)

It is about time since we all caught up

Hi All

Sorry been away for few days. Thought it may be the last trip in my 55K, nice weekend in Birmingham and nice to get the wagon on the road. On driving up I said to the missus and my son (who's 27, so not an excited kid!) I'd decided to sell the car as I'm not using it enough. After many expletives the conclusion was I was an effin idiot and would really regret it. That was then followed with the better half saying 'there's no way I want to be driving around in a poxy van'. She's a lovely person really!!:D

I tried to explain I wouldn't just get any old van, and it would be a nicely specced crew cab one. I pointed out several smart Vitos, Transporters and Custom crew cabs on our journey, but that didn't change her mind. We stayed at a nice 13th century hotel and she said imagine turning up here in a bloody van!
That threw me tbh, as I thought they would agree with the decision due to lack if use.

I still think I am making the right choice , but time to think a little more about what I'm doing.......:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

There's no deadline / rush to sell it Simon.

You need to be sure!

I went through this phase probably half a dozen times over a couple of years before I managed to crowbar the 55 out of my clutches. :D

From a neutral bystanders point of view just looking in it's obvious from what you've said you will regret it if you sell, sounds like a sorted E55 which you've put alot of time in to get it right, lack of use is irrelevant,it's there for when you fancy a blast or a trip out,I made the fatal mistake of selling my Porka a few years back and regretted it from day one and was very lucky to be able to buy it back a year later!

I do love the look of your wagon, so glad you are not selling it! You do have a lot of mods that interest me, but being a new member I couldn't PM or reply on the advert. Wondered if you wouldn't mind answering a few queries on them.

Do you mind sharing the wheel offsets and the tyre sizes you run on the BBS LM's?
Was your steering wheel bought as is or done custom by a company, if so would you recommend them? - are the paddles metal or the plastic "G-paddles"?
And finally I understand C63 back boxes need the tailpipe lengthening to fit on the E55 wagon, so more work than I had realised - did you ever run just the boxes without the headers and is it a worthwhile change? Trying to work out if changing back boxes only is worth it or if I should just leave as is! (not interested in messing with the headers/cats/resonators etc)

Thank you!

Hi

Unfortunately I will probably still be selling my car. As much as I love it I'm just not using it. I've been working away so much and once I've had a chance to do a few bits it will be back up for sale.

I spent a long time sourcing the right BBS LM's for fitment. I then fully dismantled them and hand polished the dishes and had the centres vapour blasted before finished in a custom paint finish called Galaxy grey from 'house of colour'. So I'm pretty sure they are unique. They are LM154 fronts which are 19x8.5 ET32 and LM155 rears which are 19x9.5 ET32. I have the recommended tyre fitment of 245 40 19 on the front and 275 35 19 rears. Goodyear eagle F1's. The rears just fit within the arch with about 2mm to spare and to me look perfect on the 55. I doubt you'd be able to go any wider without rolling the arches further on the rear. I will be selling the wheels separately to the car. My original AMG wheels are currently at Lepsons getting a refurb so once collected the LM's will be taken off.

My steering wheel is by 'Mansory' so it was bought like that and isn't a modified wheel. It is a fair bit chunkier in hand and feels far better than standard, but then I do have big hands. The G paddles are plastic, but are finished well. I have another new spare set too fitted onto my standard wheel which was taken off when I fitted the mansory one, they are a simple fit.

I had the PLM headers fitted before getting the C63 boxes sorted and fitted. I'd say the C63 back boxes are a definite worthwhile change. The PLM headers didn't make any noticeable change to the sound of my car on the standard rear boxes so I doubt they have made much difference to the sound of the C63 boxes either. The C63 boxes do not make it sound like a C63, they make it sound a bit louder, but not greatly, but make the pitch different, more of a higher pitched howl. And just for the M156 fans..... of course the 55K sounds much better than a C63, as we have a proper engine with a lovely SC bolted on top:D:D

Another option on rear boxes would be CLS55 ones. They sound better than stock E55 boxes, which as you know are pretty muted. Also I think E63 boxes could be worth a punt. Before I went the C63 rear box route, I was looking at modifying my stock 55 boxes and had a little plan to do so, but then a friend put me in touch with someone selling the C63 ones and I just thought it would be easier (not sure it was after the hassles of 2 visits to the exhaust fabricators when we found the pipes needed extending), but now you know what I went through it will be easier for you than me. I think someone over here and a couple in the US may have had a go at the mod I planned after I posted about it, but not sure of the outcome.

Awesome thanks for the detailed reply! Refurbishing my wheel is definitely on the list, but I was debating whether to OEM restore or buy a second "sportier" wheel like yours. Good to hear the G paddles are decent quality, think I will invest in a set of them when there's a good ebay deal or something.

I came across some cheap C63 saloon boxes the other day but bailed once I read the posts on here. I am in no rush so may as well try and get it right. Some S211 E63' boxes sound the perfect solution just can imagine they would be hard to find!

Wheels sound like absolutely perfect fitment, and thanks for confirming tyre sizes. Too may people with nice rims on these (especially in the US) are running silly impractical rear tyres - like what is the point in a 10j rim if you are running 245's! I think I do prefer LM's with silver or gold centres, but these do look very smart!
Looks like I will hang around like a vulture for the LM's then when the car does sell..... Wonder if that'll be one or two kidneys ;)

You could look for an E63 steering wheel or CLS one. I think both will fit plus I’m sure there are other options. They are both nicer wheels than the E55 one and chunkier too. I much prefer the subtle flat bottom look and profile of the mansory one though.

I’m probably biased but I think BBS LM’s look good in most colourways unless it’s something stupid. That said I’m really not keen on gold ones. I have another full set in silver which are currently dismantled. Silver looks nice, but to me the colour doesn’t really do them full justice and there are far too many replicas in silver.
