I Usually pay about 40£ a month for my mobile use.

Just been billed £165.93 because i apparently exceeded my internet usage!

(iphone 4 on 12 month contract, (750 mins and 5000 texts and unlimited data.)
I queried how this happened and why i received no warning. Also pointed out that I was within the country and using the phone as I always do, and have never gone over the allowance before.
furthermore i was supposedly on an unlimited internet plan.
I was told unlimited internet actually means 500mb a month :wallbash: and that they are under no compunction to tell me when i am approaching or exceeding this!
I am confused angry and feeling swindled. :(

so here's hoping this helps others get ripped off, and also wondering if anyone has any advice regarding what i can do about it...

I'm on O2. They send me a text message when I've used 90% of my Internet data.

Have you got anything in writing which confirms you have unlimited internet data RM (does it give exact details when you view your contract on-line)?

Unlimited im my book is subject to fair use.
Do you have the agreement from when your contract started?

Do you know how you have managed to run up such a bill?
Has the phone been downloading data because you have left an application open?

If you have your old bills you should see how it happened.

If it all proves you are liable for the bill try to get them to spread the payment.

sounds a bit odd to me though.

I was with O2 for 4 years... changed to these cowboys because of a shorter contract... thought I was being a clever whatdoyoucallit so I could upgrade to the iPhone 5 earlier...

Never had any trouble with O2 :(

The daft thing is on the second page of my contract sheet it says ( in minuscule writing)... That fair use means 500mb!

Accuse me of exaggerating; but I would have thought fair use to mean- not taking the Mick... Which ironically is how I feel they're treating me.
I wish I had a fair treatment policy I could chuck back at their corporate faces.

Also would have thought they'd have warned me if I was getting a bit high on usage.

Looked back online, and apparently on 4th June; my iPhone was online for most of the day
That sent me over my fair use limit, so they racked up charges of over a hundred quid. And my phone was lying in my study.

I was home all day ( Saturday) and didn't even use my phone.
Besides it automatically connects through the home broadband when I get home.

I am just peeved that I feel ripped off... would quite happily spend that money on a night out with loved ones; somehow not the same feeling when I'm having it fleeced off me...

If you were connected to your home broadband RM, that shouldn't have affected your mobile data allowance should it? I'd certainly try and speak to a Manager/Supervisor to see if you can at least try to come to an arrangement to get the amount reduced especially if it has never happened before. Does it state anywhere that they'll send you a reminder if you go over a certain limit?

    No it shouldn't have...

    1. The provider should have been more upfront about their 'unlimited internet' caveats

    2. They should have warned me if I was approaching this limit. What's to stop them pulling this shenanigan at various intervals? I asked them to put a block on me exceeding my allowance and they refused (don't want to shoot the cash cow, sir). F#%£@#g rip off merchants.

    3. Clearly they can see that in the months before and indeed in the month since; I have not been a heavy user. So there has obviously been some breakdown in service/ equipment.

I'm bloody fuming... and it usually takes a lot to get my gander up!

They do... and in my case they even refunded the extra cost as a one-off.
It's a business account so we have an account manager, and he said he can get finance to issue a credit on 'didn't know' basis just once, and now I've used it up... ;)

Certainly sounds out of order and maybe worth speaking to Trading Standards or at least calling your provider and state that this will be your intentions unless they agree to at least look into the matter.

Worth sleeping on it for now and give em' a call in the morning.

What about the possibility of unfair contract conditions, deception if it specifically states elsewhere that it is limited to 500Mb. Sounds like a case for Watchdog.

    Hi Rascalmaster
As you say this usage is out of the norm.
Talk to your service provider. As your phone connect via your home network when there then this can't have caused the problem.
They should be able to tell you what sites you were on while the downloads were happening.
It could be something more malicious and out of your control
I would try to solve the problem with them before contacting the CAB

Been told a 'billing guru' is going to look into it and I should call back in a few days to find out my fate...
I once had a major credit card company pull one over me regarding set up fees and I had to pay 150 quid. This leaves a similar after taste... with that lot; we immediately ceased using them and also the extended companies one of which I flew with extensively. I won't even board a train with their logo on it if there are alternatives.
It sounds a bit silly; but I'd like to think I've denied them many time more than they had me for...
I've always fancied buying groceries from Asda :)
