Big Tree Country: the area of Perthshire between Perth and Pitlochry renown for its tall pine trees. Some say the tallest in Britain.

We’re just home from our New Years bash at the Inn on the Tay at Grandtully and thought you might like a couple or three photos of this lovely area.

This the view from our window at the Inn…

Open sluice on the Fascally hydro dam at Pitlochry.

Not Transyvania but Loch Fascally looking west from the dam.

Now a series taken while climbing the Falls of Bruar near Blair Castle.

Further up the climb we started to run into the low cloud. These are the top falls

Just below where the path crosses the top bridge.

The white appearance on the trees is lichen and not frost or snow.

On the walk back down we met Harry Worth and his twin brother…

And a tribute to the falls and a plea by Rabbie Burns for trees to be planted which on his death was duly done by the Duke of Atholl.

Just before returning to the hotel we paid a quick visit to St Marys Kirk at Grandtully Castle. This is the 17th C painted ceiling.

Who needs the Sistine Chapel?

Happy New Year everyone.

What are you saying - ' A couple or three photos' !

Please count them again - they are all excellent and remind me that I must aim to get up there again this year.

My BIL was brought up in a children's home in Pitlochry and returns every year for a reunion.

I don't know any more, but it's a connection at least.

Nice pics and lovely scenery, but I'm afraid to say that those are NOT big trees. :)

Ah you were at the Hermitage. I just love this area and we go mountain biking around the Dunkeld area a lot. Just over the river from the Hermitage is the Dunkeld Arboretum. It has some seriously big trees that include giant redwoods grown from Californian seeds.

The best time to go is in autumn when the fall colours can easily rival New England.
