Bit of a prang - need to source bumper and radiator grille for W124

Thomas Turner indeed. Good service, excellent quality at way below West End gunsmith rates.

Thanks Niks and Kaylea. I have had the car up to my usual bodyshop Tony Fowkes and they have put in a quote to the insurers, who are going to send out an assessor some time soon. Hopefully everything will be hunk-dory, but thanks for your offer of help and I am sure our Surrey / Hampshire members particularly will be pleased to learn of your specialisation.

Thanks also to John and Ian - the bodyshop had no difficulty in tracking a new one down and also thanks to Nick Mercedes who has been very helpful.

Engineer assessor coming to look at the car on Thursday, would have been earlier but I am tied up.

Can't fault things so far, but googling the insurer's name throws up 5 (out of 5) completely negative reviews, but then no idea of how representative they are. I hope not!

I did the same with the 3 month warranty I got on my car. A shed load of bad press and it put me off putting in any cash towards expanding it.

As you say - hopefully not representative but I think people tend not to say anything if they receive good service so there could be 1000 happy customers against those 5.

I try to if it is well deserved (as in the case of Harveys Furniture recently) as I think sometimes we are quick to complain when things go wrong...

If your experience is good so far - that lends itself to probably a good company overall.

Had a nice engineer from Wheelers come out to check it. Sun was shining, nice polished car looked great. Many comments about nice to see a car looking so good for its age, Mercedes don't build them like they used to, shame that more modern cars would be much more expensive to repair (and much more likely to be written off) - he said on a newer Merc the light unit would be smashed completely, mine completely unscathed. Checked it all round - checked tyre tread depth (thanks Mr Froome, those new Contis you sold it to me with have hardly worn, what with me using winter tyres since November - March), and said if the garage quote was within his figures, the insurer would get in touch with the garage directly.

So I am optimistic.

Good news Charles.

Bang on the money Charles. No better feeling coming at you today.

Just one better feeling today John, which was getting an email from my mate in Afghanistan, who is all fine and who should be returning to the UK in July.

An odd couple of weeks, with many snakes but fortunately more ladders.

Had this accident - snake - last tuesday
Had big problem with garage sorting BMW - snake - Thursday
Had to cancel track day as a result - snake - Thursday
A super day at Glyndebourne - ladder - Monday
Accepted decent offer on my flat - ladder- Tuesday
Made and had accepted offer on my new place - ladder - Wednesday
Had my purchaser determine big damp problem here so offer certain to be reduced - snake - today

But then this and news from friend, the former a bit of metal, the latter a living, breathing, super guy with wife and family. So big ladder!

Isn't life like that Charles! But, you forgot to mention the great big ladder that is this site; and didn't you recently go to the Continent for a bit of a soiree. The Life of Riley is coming into my mind here.........:):)

Alas, very big snake today, my purchaser withdrew.

Really gutted.

Sorry to read that Charles. On and off I've been trying to sell my flat for 2 years now. I've decide pause on that plan and rent it out instead. The rental market is very buoyant from what I'm being told. Maybe that's an option for you?

Good news though - car repair all approved. Chatting to Andy Fowkes at the bodyshop he said assessors respond well to people being nice and with older cars will try to keep them on the road if possible. So to summarise I have had a good experience so far and at all stages I have been a paragon of politeness but then, I haven't been mucked around. Well done Sabre insurance!

Sorry to hear that Charles. I find there is always a very good reason for the very big snake Charles. Chin up. Are you without wheels for Sunday Charles ? Will we see you ?

I shall be there Sunday Peter - the car goes in next week. And I could use the distraction!

Car been in since Tuesday when the work was approved, so exactly a fortnight after the prang. I am missing the car though - I have nowhere dry to sit when I have to leave the flat for viewings! Hopefully should get it back early next week looking ravishing.

All done, looking great. Just in time to provide traditional picnic transport to Glyndebourne, eat my dust Don Giovanni!
