Black number plates

black and silver plates on post '73 cars is just another way of voluntarily contributing to the "idiots tax" pot which keeps the cost of motoring down for those who have realised that not only does it cost you money but it makes you look like a complete k**b.

Why not go the whole hog and have some incorrectly spaced, alternative font with a few extra studs etc to create a mis-spelled version of your name in glorious black and white?

What these people do doesnt affect you so why does it bother you?
They know what they are doing and the consequences, so let them get on with it.

It affects everyone if for example, a car, so plated, is involved in an accident and makes off, leaving the only witness with no idea what the correct number should be.

An extreme example, maybe, but plates are designed to be easily read by everyone. The arrogance of some people who think they're above the law is what I find really galling.

you are wrong there, it does affect us all.

The more people choose to disobey laws at whatever level means the rest of us pay with more enforcement accross the board and worse still more legislation.

If I want to drive around with black and silver plates all I need to do is go down to the garage and put the beetle back together :D

Black and silver plates can be read just fine by ANPR cameras, my old mk1 escort had a sticky plate mounted on the front edge of the bonnet and the cameras at my workplace would still open the gates to let me in even when it was dirty, Normally i am of the opinion that private or missplaced letters on number plates look stupid and i have my cars with legal plates on them, however, my Coupe (1975 reg, although i havent actually checked the year of manufacture) came with old style plates on it and so far i have been ignored by the police and as i think they suit the colour and look of the car they can stay on it 'till i get told to change them, really dont want modern plates on it if i can help it but i know it will happen eventually.

Were you near Basildon on Friday or Sat, sure I saw your car on Friday night when we were that neck of the woods.

I have this type of plate on my 78 VW...

Plastic letters riveted to aluminium plates. Correct style for the year and available new from Chestnut Registrations.

cheers guys for all your input...you've scared me, i mean persuaded me into keeping legal(ish) plates on ;)

WTF is it with number plates that people spend so much time & effort fiddling with something so inconsequential?

Are your lives so bereft of any individuality that this is the only form of expression you have available to you? Do you all live on a homogenous estate in identical boxes, all catch the same train to work to spend your days in grey a cube farm hell, all do the same thing every ****ing day of your lives so that your arid souls yearn to express your individuality & this you do by ****ing around with number plates?

I guess I just don't get the number plate thing.

I don't even remember what the number plates are on my cars, & I don't care.

personally im not into modded number plates, but i guess you have never changed anything on any of your cars to better suit your taste, or your house, or wear any jewellery and walk around in plain grey clothes and shoes.

Rightly or wrongly its our choice, I knew mine was incorrect when fitted it and have for 10 years and several cars had no issues. As for time and effort is takes about 10 clicks of the mouse to order and 4 double sided tapes to stick on car....

I appreciated modifying them is against the law and thats why 'hands up' when I was asked nicely to fit normal ones on Friday I will.

If other people want to carry on let them. Don't lose any sleep over it:)

For me putting my plate on my car makes it my own.
