Hi guys going awol for a week and driving down to East midlands in the morning [ in the Focus ] to fly to Tenerife to join the cruise ship Destiny for a week around the Canaries, Madiera and Morroco.
I will be frequenting the ships casino to win back the cost of the hol.
I haven't gambled in a casino since 2001 when I got married in Las Vegas where I had lessons in Blackjack that cut the house odds to 1%, I came out even on the week so not too bad for a first attempt but I hope to do better this time.
Rules I can remember
Always assume the dealers hidden card is a 10
Increase the stake by 1 unit after a winning hand up to a max 4 times
Go back to the original stake after a losing hand
Always stay on 12 or more if the dealer shows 6 or less
Always split Aces and 8's
Always double down on 11 and on 10 if the dealer shows 9 or under
Only pay the insurance if you have a blackjack and the dealer shows an Ace
Remember the object is to beat the dealer, not to get as close to 21 as possible
There are more rules but I can't remember them just yet but I hope they come back to me when I sit at the table
Oh yes, don't gamble after consuming alcohol [ oh sh*t]

I'll let you know how I got on, I will probably be upgrading to a C63 AMG when I return, or selling my body for medical research

You know they say its not gambling thats addictive as thats impossible. Its the person who has an addicitive / compulsive pesonality and finds his / her vice in an activity... I get the feeling youre not one of these people so I say enjoy it. If Im honest Id like to give your rules a try to see if the odds really do drop.

Look how many betting shops there are down an average high street.

Doesnt this tell you something?

My only rule on the odd occasion when I have frequented the tables, is take a set amount of money, and be prepared to lose it, as if you had gone on a good night out.

Under no circumstances go and get more in the hope of winning what you lost back, there starts the rocky road to ruin.

If you dont lose it all its a bonus:)

If you don't gamble juast thik of all the money you will save and enjoy your holiday.

I think going with the notion you want to win the money back is a bad idea.

Will you honestly tell us if you lose your shirt :) :)

The less you bet, the more you lose when you win.

Steady on, Gromit.

My old Uncle Bernie would not drink or smoke, but he loved a gamble. So Bernie would put a bet on anything and say that it was cheaper than drinking the money away.

I owe my plastic, remote control speedboat to a dodgy bet by Uncle Bernie in 1972.

hello I'm back and no don't, best I did was £47 up in the middle of week but finished up £60 down

Well if you enjoyed yourself for £60 sounds like a good deal to me. Seeing as you not too far away from me in Barnsley you seen the thread about a Yorks / Notts meet or maybe even East Coast? I'm up for it if dates suit

Sounds good.

At least you can keep your car until next time :) :)

Hope you enjoyed teh holiday

Glad you enjoyed it :)

After 1 week in Vegas and starting with $20 (because I don't normally gamble) I left $1200 up just on slots - which I know to be a mugs game.
Allison started with the same $20 and got up to nearly $800 before losing the lot. We had decided on a massive $20/$30 a night cap just to limit any possible bankrupcy!
When we flew back from Vegas we had one last night and Allison lost another $200 on blackjack/roulette/slots in about 4 hrs from the "profit" :D

Gambling is a mugs game - but I can see how it could become addicitve

Yes I agree it seems addictive -- plays on human greed -- getting something for nothing.

When ever I have gone to horse racing meets (for business of course) I have taken a max of £30 to bet with....

Once I came back even.....:D

A co-worker's husband just scored a $16,000 jackpot at the local [red] Indian casino, playing a penny slot machine, risking all of sixty-cents to do so.

And I don't know what caused me to react with such language. I'd never even met his mother.

The after-tax was $11,000.

fly to Tenerife to join the cruise ship Destiny for a week around the Canaries, Madiera and Morroco.

Have a good holiday. While Destiny may be an older ship and outclassed by the newer "superliners" the crew are really friendly and helpful, there are regular evening production shows put on by an incredibly hardworking entertainment team, great deck BBQ, and the ex- Royal Caribbean "Viking Crown" lounge, although hard to find the way in, is a lovely little bar with panoramic views.

I had a great time on Destiny last May, and will be on again next year.

Just remember, in the tiny cabins, when showering, it's easiest to rub the soap on the shower wall, then turn round twice!
