Blocking EGR - C250TD

I have acquired a new car - a 97 C250td. So far I’ve greased the wiper mechanism and checked the vital fluids. All OK.

Now I’m worried about oiling up the intercooler and adding unnecessary carbon particles to my engine oil. This is apparently all the EGR’s fault, and I plan to block it off.

One method is to block the pipe, as Dieselman mentions:

Others seem to fit a blanking plate. On the web, I’ve spotted steel plates being cut and drilled to shape. Others use the aluminium from a coke can. I have a new (and apparently unsaleable) Discovery head gasket, which could be used.

Any ideas on the best way of blocking the EGR? Any negative effects? (e.g. crankcase pressure)

Regards,

Tim

I made a lovely plate out of a piece of Stainless steel that I had kicking about. The trouble with the ball bearing trick is that the EGR tend to fill up with oil and seeped out of mine. Now with the blanking plate and a bit of sealant it stays clean.

No other effects on the engine apart from better performance and less smoke.

Thanks Jimmy, it was your threads that made me decide to sort this out. Just to be doubly sure (this engine has more plumbing than I'm used to) - where is the EGR on this engine?

Whenever the exhaust falls off, I'll commission a SS system with no silencers to help the breathing a bit. Apparently the turbo itself can keep the decibels within legal limits.

Looking at the engine, left hand side, there is a large bore aluminium tube in the inlet pipe, directly above the turbo, the EGR valve is on the underside of that. There is a rubber vacuum pipe going from it, through the bulkhead to the control valve.

Thanks Jimmy - will let the board know when I've done the job...

where is the Egr valve blocked off from!
