Not new news I know but I don't think it's been mentioned here before.

Richard Noble is managing a successor to the Thrust SSC, the BloodHound SSC, which aims to be the first land vehicle to exceed 1000 mph.

It's a really worthwhile project that aims to inspire the next generation of engineers across the world.

One of the statistics I like about the 'car' is that uses a EuroJet engine and a 800 bhp V12 engine. The V12 is used as the fuel pump!

The Bloodhound SSC has lots of events planned across the UK.

Someone is going to get badly killed sooner or later ...

Not putting a downer on it , but eventually the law of averages will catch up with you ...

One of the anecdotes Richard Noble gave at a recent conference was that the Thrust 2 which he drove to 650mph in 1983 had a take-off speed of 658mph! This was only discovered years later with the use of computer simulation tools.

It's a really worthwhile project..

Really? Is it likely to affect design of cars on the high street??
Surely it is in new forms of propulsion that will be the future.
The eurojet engine has already been researched in the design process for the eurojet surely?

It's not as linear as saying the engine R&D used in Bloodhound will transfer into road cars etc. Though new structural optimisation tools used in the project will increasingly be used in every day car design.

I suspect Bloodhound will cost less than a F1 team for 1 season and if it succeeds in achieving 1000mph then it will have created something truly iconic and inspirational for children to admire.

Only then will children aspire to become engineers, who may go on to design green cars and all the other worthy engineering project this world needs.

I still can't help but think that the money/effort could have been ploughed into something more worthwhile. And what of the environmental impact for something which has no tangible worthwhile benefit?
Surely this is the 'sledgehammer' technique, with the design finesse in trying to keep it on the ground, which is probably not the way things will progress in transport terms.

Is this the only way that our children can be inspired?
Maybe they should have some design projects in the BB house, or on Britains got talent, in order to reach the youfs of today??

Yes, I think I know what you mean.

For what it's worth, space travel and F1 make claims of technology transfer, but I'm sure most technology could be developed without them cheaper and more environmentaly.

Sadly I don't think the yuff today are subtle enough to appreciate the engineering that would go into making a 1000 mpg car rather than a 1000 mph car.

It's all bangs and whizzes these days and there certainly should be a big bang with Bloodhound! :)

I'm sure Noble cars use some of the design and engineering know how gained from record breaking cars, and even if not it's a showcase of what they can do so promotes the firm.

Thrust SSC was built and run before Noble cars made any road cars. They were only known because of Thrust.

Let's see someone put that in a Nissan GTR.

Richard Noble isn't connected to Noble Cars is he?

Lee Noble who established Noble Automotive sold it some time ago.
