BlueTEC
Mercedes Benz has finally won approval to license BlueTEC SUVs in all 50 states. They will shortly start selling the ML 320, R 320, and GL 320 BlueTEC in all US states, and feature the worlds cleanest diesel technology available.
The vehicles, which will first be available in the US, will comply with the extremely strict requirements of the American Bin 5 and ULEV emission standards. This will make Mercedes-Benz the first manufacturer to be able to license diesel SUVs in all 50 US states.
The public is not yet aware how this technology works, so here's a simple explanation. The second BlueTEC version, used in the new GL 320 BlueTEC, ML 320 BlueTEC and R 320 BlueTEC models, makes use of AdBlue, a harmless aqueous urea solution, that is injected into the exhaust-gas stream. This process releases ammonia, which converts up to 80 percent of the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water by a process of reduction in the downstream SCR catalytic converter.

what about the carbon oxides.will these not produce methane ?
NH3+CO2. exothermic reactions. produce some form of carbonate
produces more heat and creates more warming

NH3+NO2+HO===========Could potentially be NH4NO3.. Very explosive combination./
Jsut thinking when the cars become older and the technology is not quite as clean and spot on after say 100k miles

Does it need to top up Adblue now and then? If I smell ammonia then I know the engine has a malfunction. Ammonia accordingly is a poison, I dread it when travelling in the countryside when the farmer at this time spread it on the field.:rolleyes:

Does it means end of CDi? What Merc roadmap about Kompressor?;)

As far as i know ammonia is an explosive making material. very toxic as well ,not sure how it can be contained if there is a crash or malfunction

The answer's in the quote. The ammonia combines with the NO to make Nitrogen and water. Any ammonia is only in the exhaust system

I suspect MB has engineered this system carefully enough not to make schoolboy-level chemistry errors

which is why i said in a crash or malfunction, where schoolboy errors will definitely occur.

Tyres are engineerd to go 150mph, in a blow out the events will be a disaster.
ammonia is released (should never be at all) to combine with NO to produce nitrogen and water.
In a misfire, too much NH3 and too little NO which happens with faulty cats all the time and what do you get, you get NH4NO3 which is not the best of things

It only exists for a fraction of a second in tiny amounts. You won't ever form Ammonia Nitrate in those circumstances.

Ready made bomb no wonder terrorists favoured Merc cars.:cool:
