It has been some time since I looked into MB and bluetooth models as they are so far behind. But does any one know have MB caught up so I could get my Sony Ericson W850i to work with a bluetooth module and on the 3 network??

The S/E W850i will work with the cheap bluetooth puck but not with the expensive one. The expensive one will fully integrate the phone to the cars system, download the phonebook and use the cars aerial, the cheaper one will use the phones aerial so reception is not always good.
The expensive one uses bluetooth SAP which according to the motor trade is the way forward, unfortunately not all phones support this system yet.

There is one problem with the BT SAP puck and 3 (operator), this BT SAP device is a dual band GSM phone and "3" only allows dual mode (GSM/UMTS) phones.

One Australian member got the local 3 allow service for his MB phone though, I guess they accepted it as a compromise of loosing a customer altogether.

SAP (Sim Access Profile) will only get your contacts from your SIM and not your phone memory though. The cheaper one uses HFP (Hands Free Profile) which is also the way forward if your phone supports it.
I think the underlying problem is how MB has developed to these 'standards' as numerous issues surround different phones compatibility. Kind of defeats the object of defining a standard unless you code to it!!

Does this mean that even if I get the right phone (MB way behind the times with phone tech) it still wont work because of 3 networks dual band..

3 is using a single band UMTS network, on 2.1 GHz. Then they have national roaming for one of the local GSM (normally dual band) networks.

If you get the HF profile BT puck, your phone connects directly to the cellular network (with its own antenna), if your phone works with 3 in the first place, it would work in your car too.

Thanks for the info.
Just to confirm it ONLY works with the cheaper hands free puck (using the telephones antenna and not able to see the phone's contacts).
