BMW 840ci

It's a 4.4 840ci Sport that's grabbing my attention. The 850's are getting a little old now.

I'm in no rush and I do like the colour of the original one in post 2....it also happens to be a couple of miles from my warehouse....not listing of mileage though which puts me off as it's likely to be high.

I'll just browse until a real peach comes available....

that one at motorhouse shipley appears stunning.. why not that one? Im sure they would take an offer...

It does look good doesn't it.

What's a sensible price for one of these Jay, or are they all now purely on condition?

Honestly, I don't fancy going to Shipley though, I'm in Surrey.

No book price at all.. just look to see what others are going for.. but 10K for a one owner car with 68 on the clock cant be bad... I would ask them what they would take and if its the one you want, get it delivered down.

Lots of people by cars from me over the phone and as long as you have driven one and know its what you want then nothing wrong with it...

you are always protected by distance selling rules if any issues arise upon inspection.

basically it has to be as described... a seller cant sell you faulty goods or say its sold as seen if buying unseen... sale of goods act still applies..

Things to check....ABS controller...if the ABS light is on, don't get fobbed off with "its just a sensor". 2nd, Air Con.....heater matrix is prone to leaking and its a dash out job.

Electrics...check everything.

From the cars I've seen and driven, the interior does not stand up to wear as well as a Merc....ie leather creases and looks shabby much quicker than a Merc.

They are very nice cars to drive.....I picked up a 78,000 mile 840 Sport with the 4.4 recently at auction and it came with full history, great spec and it got knocked down for £3.7k. My mate who I bought it for was chuffed to bits with it. Lovely car.

How much?.....

Where on earth can I find one at auction? At that price if it looks tidy it's worth a punt even if a few things need fixing...I can play with it for a year or so then sell it on and get something else.

What are the Auctions to visit for this kind of sale?

It's years since I went to an auction and I understand they've changed somewhat since i last visited.

I have £10,000 to play with for a toy...if I spend half that even better.

The 840ci caught my eye but in all honesty I'm looking for something which is large powerful and a bit of fun, if I can own for a year free by buying at auction then that seems like a great idea, but I'm just not sure where to start.

not that I can afford it.. not that I have anywhere to put it...

Hang around in town on a Friday night and you'll soon find somewhere to put it at a price you can afford..

Absolutely true.....the only thing that needed doing was a small dink in the rear wing needed sorting, but that was a straight forward job and since then its been a daily car. Turns out it was an "Individual" spec car, ie came with some nice to have features that were not normally found on standard 840's.

Stupidly my mate then went and sold his older 840 which he had gone through from head to toe (he's a BMW Specialist) for £1700 on e-bay....OK it had a some miles on it, 140,000, but it ran superbly and was in very good condition. That car ended up going to Ireland.

I must try and get some photos of the car I purchased for him

I purchased that car at BCA Blackbushe...it was a Trade In car being offered by Jardine's

Is Blackbushe the place to go for this kind of thing?

What do you do, get a catalogue on whats for sale before you go so not to get a wasted journey?

you have to remember that 3.5 sounds cheap but then some of the things that can go wrong can cost many many £1000's.. why bother with the hassle.. i would rather buy a sorted car and enjoy it from day one..

Actually for me I think finding something at an auction is part of the fun. I had a quick flick through Autotrader and there is a vast range of prices for the 8 series.

There are some 70K - 80K mile cars on there (4.4i) for £5000 - £6000...with history....these really do range a lot in value.

Hi Mudster,

No that car (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/786337.htm) isn't mine - it's either avus or estoril blue. Mine was Orient blue which is much darker...sort of a royal or midnight blue I guess.

You really will enjoy one if you decide to take the plunge, it's a lovely thing in the metal & turns more heads than most these days. The dashboard & instrument binnacle is also the epitome of clarity - for me it all just works perfectly with no clutter As a few other posters have mentioned they came pretty well spec'd. The only real extras were the bolted alloys, heated front seats, rear blind & EDK (electronic damper control). BMW individual really just allowed you to create some very peculiar colour combos with the body, carpets, leather & contrast piping.

I've come to the conclusion that dark colours suit this bodyshape far better than lighter colours.

Thanks MPG...I'm quite surprised how reasonable these are looking...should make a nice weekend car. I'll look seriously in the new year..

Weirdly , i just followed a silver 840 down Hampton High Street , having not seen another one for months ...

Did indeed have a lot street presence , and is still a bloody good looking car .
