BMWs - get them while they're hot!

WHAT? BMW make the best engines in the world, that can't be true, stop listening to your mate down the pub...
:D

As it happens, I don't think the Mini has a BMW engine.

I'm certain the diesel Mini has a Peugeot engine, although I can't quite recall who makes the petrol.

Used to be a Chrysler engine, can't recall who makes the current petrol one.

No, BMW make their own diesel engine now, but previously it was a PSA and previous to that it was a Yaris diesl engine.

Its the turbocharged petrol engine that is going up in flames though. I saw one do it a couple of weeks ago. Had it not been for a quick thinking driver who borrowed a 2.5kg CO2 extinguisher, the car would have been history. At one point the flames coming out of the bonnet air intake were 5 feet high!

The car actually exploded a 3 foot fireball out of the nearside wheel arch as it ws driving down thw street.

They should of stuck to the supercharger, my brother has a 2004 cooper S JCW, fantastic little car.

X2 what a sound. Iirc the petrols in the mini are PSA sourced. Real German cars don't do that. The engine is a 1600 turbo doing service on citreons and Peugeots. Owners of those should be worried

I fully expect Mercedes with its new RENAULT/Nissan engines to be the subject of a thread like this on a BMW board

Isn't the engine fire situation just BMW's answer to snow clearance to save buying winter tyres.

Wrong - diesel Mini Cooper D and One D from August 2010 have the same BMW diesel engine as in the 1 Series.
Previous versions Cooper D and One D (R56) did us a variant of the PSA engine. The R53 Mini diesel used a Toyota diesel engine.
The petrol engines are based on PSA engines (Codenamed Prince) produced in France for Peugeot cars and at Hams Hall for Minis.

They should have stuck with the Peugeot engines then......

It's the petrols catching fire not the 2litre BMW diesel

It's like being on a roundabout this.

The engines that are setting alight, who makes them?

And wtf is a Mini doing with a two litre diesel engine?!

You seen the size of them??!!
They need all that torque to get the thing moving!
:D
