Bout to press the button on a track day including caterham car hire with this company (at Donington park) and wondered if anyone had any relevant prior experience. I am a total track novice so my priority is to get some decent guidance and plenty of track time to practice.

The closest I got to a track day was a couple of laps around the Nurburgring in 2012.

I had the kids navigating for me as they had spent that much time on their Xbox's they knew every bend and crest.

I had 450 bhp under my right foot and I thought life doesn't get any better.

Until......I was overtaken at speed by a VW Polo with four (that's right 4 !!) young lads in it.

At that point all my dreams and aspirations went out of the window.

My son looked at me and I looked at my son.

I thought to myself I wonder what my son is thinking and before I had chance to ask my lips opened and I said in my manly voice, "5hit happens son".

The remainder of the lap was done in silence and that was the end of racing career.

PS. In my defence your worships the VW was displaying German plates.

I've used Bookatrack before but in my own car, they are one of the better run track day companies in my opinion so you shouldn't have any problems.

Donington is a great track with plenty of elevation changes to keep it interesting. The legendary Craner curves are a challenge as is the following old hairpin and then up to Mcleans and Coppice. You then get a bit of a breather down the straight.

Hopefully you'll be using the National circuit as the GP circuit doesn't flow as well although it is longer.

I used to be an instructor at Donnington you will love it one of the best tracks in the country with the elevation (second only to Knockhill) did 5 years there too. Redgates corner, craner curves at Donnington are brilliant you will have a fab time and will get to push the car to its absolute limits. I always love returning to Donnington there an Knockhill are my spiritual motorsport homes :D

Thanks for input - all booked in for Saturday at Donington Park. Conditions looking middling - cold and the odd shower. If anyone else is there, I'll be the one driving extremely slowly and stalling on the way out of the pit lane :-)

Awesome day today at Donington. As rank novices it was a bit hairy at times sharing the track with much more experienced and faster drivers and I hope I was good enough at allowing people past not to ruin anyone's day! The Caterham was amazing to drive once I'd got used to it, incredibly involving and raw yet forgiving. Getting into the merc at the end of the day felt like driving a magic carpet by comparison.
