I bought my first Merc yesterday!
Got a 1984 230E with a 4-speed manual for R 4 000 (that's about £ 340).

She's not much too look at right now, but planning to change that.

Pictures to follow shortly.

welcome to the world of mb and all who sail in her :thumb:

hi and welcome to the forum.......... the links didnt work for me

Thanks :)
The following needs to be sorted out before I'm willing to drive her:
  • Power steering - belt needs to be re-installed.
  • Exhaust - Bad leak needs to be repaired
  • Steering - steering wheel knocks when I drive more that 80km/h (however when I turn the wheel into a turn, the knocking subsides somewhat)
  • Full service - Oil change, Plugs, filters, etc.
What I found when I pulled the thermosat this morning:

Both links just worked for me.
Congratulations on the car and welcome to the forum.

My brother in law's father (who now lives in Cape Town) had a white W123 230E when the family lived in Durban. I think it did them over a decade of service before being sold for a W124 E280.

Welcome!

Welcome. :)

Welcome to the forum, not sure where you are but i spend a lot of time in Joburg, Durban, PE, Capetown and richards bay

Look forward to seeing the photos as you progress

Enjoy the MB experience

I love the w123. Especially in the condition (looks wise) your one is in now. She looks amazing. Like she has the heart of a lion.

My mum had one when I was only yay high. She was gold and I called her Grace (mums name) after all the hard work she put it.

I hope your w123 grows to be a part of your family like Grace did to mine. Addtionally, welcome to the family. Good to see another w123 lover.

Hi ans welcome to the forum looks a great project have fun!!!

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. Will be uploading a lot more photos during the course of the day. Maybe someone can help me with a little bit of a problem in the meantime. When I put my VIN into the Russian site, it does not recognize it. What would the reason be for this? (I'm not sure if this car was manufactured in Germany, or in South Africa - MB has a rather big plant here.)

Hello and welcome to the forum - you've certainly got the basis of a good restoration project there . The W123 has deservedly got a reputation for being a very robust , well engineered car and they are easy to work on .

I'd certainly investigate that knocking as a matter of urgency - it could potentially be the most serious fault - check out steering gear , front brakes , simple things like are the wheels bolted on correctly ??

Good luck with it .

The car was out of service for about one year. The power steering belt has also been removed. Would any of these two cause a knocking in the steering?
