Had W210 320Cdi which had the same "black death" under the cover. Took me overall 5 hours with dissolving it but I managed to save all 6 injectors with just seal change. It was my best Merc ever. 320 should be good fun aswell.

When i bought my s210 320 cdi in 2018 i took the engine cover off before i bought it after seeing black death pictures like that on the internet.Had W210 320Cdi which had the same "black death" under the cover. Took me overall 5 hours with dissolving it but I managed to save all 6 injectors with just seal change. It was my best Merc ever. 320 should be good fun aswell.

One of the biggest causes of black death is when you use diesel injector cleaner, but that photo above is the worst case ive ever seen, massive seal failure, or loose injectors clamps/snapped retaining bolts, or constant use of injector cleaner.
I have removed the engine cover on my om613. Makes it easier to check for potential fauts before they develop. That is as others have said the worst black death I have ever seen, and a lesson learned I suppose lift that engine cover off and inspect the engine,I hope your 320 gives you good service.
That is what eBay breakers are for !Well the cover makes the engine look tidier, but the only time I took mine off I put it behind my car and then my stepson wanted to get his van out so I reversed over my cover and smashed it,and that leads to a interesting conversation with the Mercedes parts guy, when he asks just why do you need a new engine cover,so you tell him and he has you marked down as a complete idiot, which may well be true.
