Here we go again, the media and the government wanting to strangle free enterprise to fund a black hole in the economy.

All that will happen is that these firms will move their HQ's offshore and we will lose considerable Corporation Tax.

The price at the pump is still mainly made up of tax and duty.

The better question is how many millions in profit a day does the government "earn" on fuel. For sure it will be a lot more than £37m, and without any of the risk.

And what do they do with it!!!!!!

Not to mention this drilling and investment could be for nothing - there are no guarantees.

But this is done and they still make this profit. Drilling and investment is an overhead and will shown in their accounts, probably as research and development. One must also bear in mind, this profit is for one quarter not 12 months!

Return on capital invested is probably fairly average.

Think how much more individual taxation we would face without these companies swelling government coffers?
