For the second time only in 14 months I had the emergency brake assist kick in.

The strange thing is that both occasions were identical, I was slowing gently (honest) for a round about with only gentle pressure on the brake pedal.

Suddenly theres a loud hiss, the sort you get from a air line at a petrol staion, and the pedal moved a further 2-3 inches <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> . As soon as it did it I released the pedal and all worked normally again <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> , but for those of you who have yet to experience it, trust me it puts the willy's up you and leaves your heart pounding <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>

Oh, and it leaves the car almost standing on it's headlight's <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'> &nbsp;<img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'> . Just make sure no one's behind you as they wont stop like you, TRUST ME!!!

As a safety feature it deserves a few <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/banana.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':bannana:'> &nbsp;<img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/banana.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':bannana:'> &nbsp;<img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/banana.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':bannana:'>

I asked the wife if it put the willy's up her aswell but she told me not to be so rude <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dontgetit.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':dontgetit:'> .

Sounds good!

Don't think I have that though &nbsp;<img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>

I'm sure you will,as I'm sure they put it on all cars from around 1996/7 onwards. Maybe V12 would know.

If you dont know the idea is the BRAINS can detect if your applying the brakes in a emergency (something to do with your reaction time and how quickly you depress the pedal) as a result the servo suddenly becomes 10X more powerfull.

Only thing is, is that whilst it will stop you crashing into the car in front &nbsp;<img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> &nbsp;you will proberly cause a huge pile up behind you <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> &nbsp;as no other sod will stop so quickly <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('> .

yeah you do graham ....

Turn the ignition key to position 2 and all the dash should light up there will be an orange light with the letters ASR/BAS on it .. thats the one

Im not sure exactly what models/years it is fitted to, but you can get it from 96 onwards on a W140...

Have a look at your instrument cluster, one of the orange/yellow warning lights will be lit 'BAS' when the ignition is in position 2.

On later cars, the BAS light is also combined with the ESP one.

All cars from 99/00 are fitted with it, definately.

Any Pics? <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>

Oh, yeah, i do have the light!

I did an emergency brake test after I got the car, so maybe I did experience it - I did stop quick &nbsp;<img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

It would have been great on my driving test a few years ago &nbsp;<img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

I did a search to find more info.

Here is a quote from a site I found:

&quot; Here is what Mercedes-Benz says about it:

The Brake Assist System (BAS), an electronic system by Mercedes-Benz, interprets the braking behavior of the driver and initiates the full braking effect when it identifies an emergency situation. This reduces the braking distance substantially.

Here is the engineering foundation for BAS:

Conventional braking systems usually use engine vacuum to increase braking capability. Instead of relying solely on vacuum power to provide effective brakes, an electric pump pressurizes brake fluid to provide power assist for BAS and the necessary brake force for 4ETS.

The pressurized brake fluid is stored at about. 180 bar (2600 psi!) in a reservoir known as the accumulator. From the accumulator the high pressure brake fluid is supplied to the hydraulic operating cylinder in the master cylinder assembly. Commands to utilize the pressurized fluid comes from either 4ETS or BAS. When the brakes are applied and BAS deems it necessary, a lever connected to the brake pedal releases varying amounts of the high pressure fluid to assist in stopping the car.

Here is what BAS does for you:

Most drivers, under normal braking conditions as well as under emergency conditions, start out with little brake pressure and whenever necessary they will increase their pedal effort. In an emergency this behavior leads many times to a crash since the car could not be stopped in time. Those situations require maximum pedal pressure from the beginning - if necessary the effort can be reduced later in the process.

With other words most drivers do not use the ability of the brakes to their advantage - BAS automatically corrects that. The system recognizes emergency situations within milli seconds and releases pressurized brake fluid into the system as soon as the driver touches the brake pedal. As soon as the driver releases the brake pedal, BAS kicks back into a standby mode.

BAS creates a much higher stopping force for emergencies than most drivers are ever able to generate. By doing so BAS helps to prevent accidents

Just another good reason to drive a car made by Mercedes-Benz&quot;
