Yesterday, I noticed the rear discs have surface rust and it looks bl**dy terrible! I know it's quite normal and it will go as soon as I next drive it.

However, I'm now wondering why the fronts don't do the same (sport pack/c32 discs). They still look nice and shiney

I presumed they're all made from the same material - cast iron.

Can anyone explain?

In normal braking ie.driving forwards, the rear brakes don't contribute much to the overall braking effort, so the pads apply a small pressure to the discs.

Ye misunderstand!

This is when it's not been driven for a couple of days - in damp weather.

I just wonder why the fronts don't do the same.

Strange, as I've noted the opposite with my car. If left a couple of days the fronts go rusty and the rears are fine...

I put it down to the fact the rears are not as exposed?

Sorry dosen't help you Kjay!

My new brakes were installed less than a week ago. I have left the car for 3 days and all my discs have rust on them. Think its because they are bare metal and open to the weather, and all unprotected metal exposed to the elements will rust. When i had a garage they stayed nice and shiny all the time unless i drove out in the rain, parked up and left the car for a few days then they were rusty.

I just think it's strange how there's a difference between the front and the rears. Even more so, now Mr WN says his are the opposite!
