2001 430E ESTATE
Hi, I have a 2004 C180 estate. Drove out yesterday and 80% of braking had disappeared. Had the car taken to my Indy, no fluid leaks, broken pipes etc. Drove it this morning and doesn’t feel right. He checked the servo and attached pipes and there was vacuum.
Description is pretty vague description but any ideas please.

Pedal? To the floor or solid as a rock?

This could be due to brake fade - the brakes may have overheated, and the brake fluid boiled - once the brakes have cooled, everything is back to normal.

When was the brake fluid last changed? And was the correct fluid used (DOT certification)? It's due to be replaced every 2 years. If the brake fluid is contaminated, or absorbed water, the boiling point will go down and the fluid then starts turning from liquid to gas which will result in significant loss of braking efficiency, until the brakes cool down again.

This can also happen on a well-maintained car, e.g. when driving fast and braking hard repeatedly ('traffic lights drag racing'), or when going downhill with the foot on the brake pedal (instead of putting the car in lower gear, or using the shift limited if automatic), especially with cars fitted with standard brakes (as opposed to the larger discs on the Sport variant).

Had this problem with my 190B, I know it's very old, but brake master cylinder works on same principle.
Internal seals kaput, no leaks, pedal to floor.

And that is further than usual?
No, don’t think so. When I drove out this morning, first time I tested the brakes it felt wrong, it improved as I drove and did hard braking.

Define 'wrong'.
What were the symptoms that caused you to declare '80% of braking had disappeared'? Was the car actually failing to stop?

When it first happened two days ago, I braked and it kept going, stopping eventually.

Just a thought...
I had some brake pads detach themselves from the backplate (backplate corroded & shed the block of friction material).
Fortunately I noticed in time & replaced the offending pads. However if that were to happen when driving, and the friction material was ejected (as would have happened on my vehicle) then that would leave just the metal backplate against the disc which would substantially reduce the braking performance.??

The OP stated in his first post that he has had the vehicle inspected by his Independent garage. I imagine that lack of brake pads may have been noted. 🤔👍

You would expect so, wouldn't you.
Fwiw I discovered my failed pads when I removed the wheel to change it as I had failed my MOT on a crack on the inner wall of that tyre.
The MOT tester had thoroughly inspected the vehicle. With the wheel in place it was possible to see that there was plenty of meat on the pads, however only with the wheel removed was it possible to see that issue. In fact, if I wasn't so OCD about my wheels spinning free ( the bubbling rust between the friction material and the backplate was creating the pad to drag slightly after the brakes were released) I may not have spotted it even then.!
However I agree it is a long shot, but fwiw I felt that experiance I had may have been worth mentioning despite being unlikely.?
