It's a feature on recent Mercedes. Applies brakes if it thinks you won't. Makes beeping noises to alert you

Perhaps you shouldn't drive so close to the car in front?

What you described is distronic though, this may be something new then

    It's called Pre-safe brake.

It is useful. When I had it on courtesy cars, it beeped when someone cut you up although I never had it apply the brakes. You must drive very close to the car in front.

Isn't Distronic cruise control with bells and whistles? Whereas brake safe is always active?

You can turn it off or (on newer models) change how far/close it comes into play.

Although not modern any longer my W211 has a slightly irritating feature where, under certain, circumstances the brakes apply more strongly than my ush on the pedal would normally provoke.

Say I lift off the throttle and brake in quick succession then sometimes the braking effect is increased.

When I have passengers it makes me look a little clumsy.

I've only driven one car with it I think - an X5. It did not like the speed that I was gaining on someone who was turning off a dual carriageway. No problem to me, as I could see what was happening, car had a minor paddy and gave m a small heart attack...

My 5 Series had it and on occasion when I over took but pulled out a bit late it did the same, nearly head butted the steering wheel

Mines usually just flashes the red light only had it actually apply the brake maybe once or twice.

Yes Distronic cruise control is the full bells and whistles, brake safe is a feature on the newer cars doesn't really bother me though.

Think its name is Collision Prevention Assist Plus, it's on my W205 C63 saloon, I've had the red light numerous times and the beep a couple of times but no braking as yet........I've had the car just over a week and I've seriously considered switching it off. I find the red warning light really irritating especially when overtaking on dual carriage ways. (it seems to pick up the vehicle in the inside lane from time to time).
