I've had the MB front discs and pads changed several times now on my SEC, but after about a week the brakes start squealing again on gentle braking under 30mph and when coming to a halt in traffic. Any suggestions on squeak-free pads, or is there another solution?

I gather that a garage did it? If it was you, you did use grease didnt you?
(Sorry if thats teaching your granny...)

There is a sachet of anti squeal grease you can get from MB dealers,Its only a couple of quid. That may help.

And anti squeal shims if necessary.

Try removing the pads, give them a clean up with a wire brush, smaer brake grease on the rear of the pad and refit.

I recently fitted some EBC greenstuff pads to the rear of my car and they squealed really badly, no I mean REALLY badly.
Slid in shims to no avail but then removed and carried ou the above and as if by magic silence. The surface of the pads was filthy with old material removed from the disk by the special surfacing compound on the EBC pads.

Thanks very much for the responses. An MB specialist did the work. They had the car back this week, and apparently MB have changed the brake pad design - they aren't chamfered any more for the W126, which can cause the squealing. So the garage chamfered the front pads and it's been a couple of days now with nothing like the previous noise. Way too early to tell if it's fixed, but fingers crossed.

How difficult is it to change pads yourself? I'm not a mechanic, and I can't find a Haynes manual for the W126, but surely it can't be impossible?
