Depends many factors. It is a "how long is a peice of string"? question.
We always say 500-1000miles. But remember the wear sensors are only on one pad per side. The other pad could be very worn and nearly on the metal. Take a wheel off and check them.

wow, I better not drive it then, I thought I had read some where that when the warning comes on, you still have a hundred or so miles before it goes totally....

You are safe enough to drive to your favourite local specialist to get the brake pads renewed. Just don't go on any trans-continental tours or track days!
