Hello chaps ,

A few days ago my brake pad light came on , and now stays on

which indicates my brakes need changing.

What I want to know is this - Can this be done at kwik fit or does it need to be a stealer or a independent ?

is it going to be exbensive ?

thanks

Sanj

what car mate? I would use an independent anyway, but is quite an easy job to do. However an independent may take a little more care in cleaning out the calipers, seating the pads properly etc...

I tend to use original parts as they cost around the same...

Agreed, use OEM parts as brakes are far too important for cowboy fitters and cheap parts.

Its a w202 240 elegance 1999

Thanks for the advice

I will go to an independent and see how it goes

Aftermarket parts have to meet the same EC-R90 standard as OE equipment, the only difference being price and the name on the box, MB, Audi etc dont make their own brakes.

You can do the job yourself very easily with just a few basic tools :)

Agreed with Jimmy, brake parts are going to be much the same wherever you buy them although we found that the dealers price for the parts were actually cheaper than our local parts store

I would say pay for the best parts you can get, and then fit them yourself. That way, you can take as much time and care as you wish, and it is still cheaper than paying a cowboy to fit poor quality parts! Brake parts are very quick and easy to fit, and as has been said already, are not expensive from the main dealer.

IIRC, brand new discs/pads/caliper bolts/clips/pins/retaining screws/pad wear sensors etc etc all round front and rear, including new brake fluid and brake cleaner cost less tham £200 all in from my local MB Main Dealer (cannot call them a stealership in this instance) (1997 C230K Sport).

Just my opinion,

Will

Yesterday I had new brake discs and pads fitted to my Fiat Scudo van by my local garage, cost £133 all in, the pads alone to buy from Halfords were £54 for Ferodo pads. Two years ago the Fiat main dealer charged me £114 to change JUST the front pads while performing a small service......rip off !

As a guide, Hellfrauds are usually the same price as dealers or very slightly less, motor factors would be much cheaper than both to the trade, or you could contact a friendly motor factor who gives MBClub discount and offers a mail order service. ;)
