Virgin may buy Honda F1 and rescue Buttons career, I hope so as there's another 700 employees staring at redundancy

Richard Branson is such a poon hound for free publicity. I'm pretty sure he'll pop up on Jade Goody's wedding offering her free flights to somewhere (which he know's won't be used because of her man's parole conditions) & getting hundreds of thousands of ££££ free publicity for his generous offer.

Who in their right mind would buy into F1 now when huge sponsors are falling over themselves trying to bail out? Especially a team with Jensen "also ran" Button contracted at umpteen millions p.a.

IMHO this is PR BS.

I listened to that, I like Richard Branson, I like the fact He's managed what He has and reached the level of success he has without becoming a pompous ass

Oooohhhh ... Surely NOT !!
I can't possibly believe anything like that of the saintly Richard Branson !!

I would guess any company wanting to reach a Global Audience as cheap as it can. This is the cheapest and most effective tool to do that with. However, he will be trying to get the price down, and some effective money from Bernie too.

As far as Jenson's contract is concerned, that will be with Honda, and will not be a saleable asset, nor subject to normal employee conditions. This means that Button can be hired for as little as Virgin want to offer him, or he can go live on a beach somewhere, and rake in what Honda have to pay him until his term expires with that contract. He gives up that right if he races for another team.

He is the best driver currently available, and it would be a wise move to keep him at present.

And think of the PR Branson can get by keeping all these employees in a job, and so on. This is right up Bransons alley.

However, I am not sure Virgin Racing will last. Virgin usually lend their name to something for a year or 2 then move on. I guess this is the vehicle for Ross Brawn and Nick Fry to get the management buyout in line.

I would guess a Virgin team, will be a name, with a lucrative title sponsor, and Branson flying balloons around at each circuit for a year or 2, and then they will reduce to being joing title sponser, then major sponsor, then minor, then off to something new.

Bernie seems to want this to happen, so there is something else going on too.

Bernie may get Mercedes to do a deal for the engines, that means the team would not be known as Virgin Mercedes, but more likley Team Virgin. He will have his grubby fingers in it somehow to get something out of it. Possibly some FOTA embargo for Branson, so that the money for the team, and therefore the main player, is not allowed to join FOTA and therefore starting the cracks in that group.

Last thing Max and Bernie need, is a cohesive group of the people who provide the teams for the races. Divide we stand, together we rise, does not bode well in autocratic dictatorship rules.

Plus Bernie will be after cheap airfares to get more cost savings in the public eye.

I red also that Honda will provide some funding for 2009 as part of the deal - it would be cheaper (and better publicity) for them than paying off the 700 staff they employ many of which will be on lucrative contracts

I think Honda would probably be looking to not pay him if he's racing for somebody else and conversely he might prefer to race than sit out his contract.

If I was Honda and got stuck with letting him drive elsewhere but stuffed with the tab then I'd have him festooned with Honda advertising as a condition.

If he wasn't British we'd hardly notice him. Tremendously overhyped in teh UK when he started and saddled with some bad time/wrong place team decisions.

If a new team owner gets him for free and he's motivated then that's good value for money. But if you have to spend a seven figure sum to get him then I think that I'd looking at putting my money elsewhere.

His contract at present, expires at the end of 2009. If he doesn't race due to Honda folding the team, he gets paid and sits on a beach. If he agrees to race with another team, Honda don't pay him and his contract is mutually terminated.

If Virgin take over Honda Racing, they could ask Honda to honour Buttons contract, allowing him to race in the Virgin Team effectively for free, but I doubt they would get Honda Advertising on his overalls or car.

Here steps in Bernie. He could negotiate the deal so that Mercedes don't brand the car, thereby allowing Honda to pay Button and use him for Honda type ads, and Branson gets him for free, and Mercedes get paid for engines, and Bernie keeps a team in F1.

As far as Button being overhyped, makes no difference. he is experienced with the team and would be an asset and unless someone can name anyone else currently looking for a drive, he is the best available.

And if you want to negotiate a contract with him, you would get him for under £1m as it is. He hasn't got any choices left open to him.

So he is the best bet all round.

There must be something behind all this however. My guess is Bernie is in there doing some shoring up. If this teams goes, he starts to lose out to the other teams. If he loses out to the other teams, Mad Max will take control of Bernies empire.

If that happens, no more F1.

That is an outrageous suggestion. Admittedly, Richard Branson has offered Jade and her yob exclusive use of his own private island for the honeymoon. But I am sure that he wanted to make the offer discretely and privately and was dismayed when he found out that he had accidently done it by announcing to all the national papers rather than by picking up the phone for a private chat.
