Woke up this a.m to find my rear quarter window smashed and some minor trivia stolen from the rear of my brand new ML250. No one (including me) has heard the alarm overnight which would be very strange as its a very quiet road and when i went to the car this a.m the alarm wasnt sounding and there were no indications on the dash that anything had happended...
there are two wire contacts now visible in what is left of the window 1/4 light that were glued to the glass - are these part of the alarm circuit or something else?
The alarm system sets but didnt go off when i waved my arm thru the open window this morning when i saw what had happended...
temp fix on window now as its 7 !!! days wait from Mercedes germany to ship the glass to Autoglass

am very upset :(

The wires will be an aerial of some description.

Try sitting in the car and locking it. Wait a short while and move and the alarm should go off. Unless yours doesn't have the interior protection option?

my problem is the alarm didnt sound as the rear quarter was smashed - this surely can't be correct?

In the old W164 ML, for the UK, we get the heightened theft option as standard, which includes break glass sensors in those rear quarter lights.

What I don't know is whether the W166 MLs in the UK have that option as standard. If I look at EPC, those glasses change with the option 882 (interior safeguard/towing protection). so my suspicion is that if you have that option the alarm should have gone off.

If your car did not have 882 it would explain why waving your hand in didn't work.

Whats your VIN number ?

Richard

My suggestion was to test whether the interior detection was working (fitted?) as you didn't hear anything. In such a quiet street I'm surprised no one heard the glass breaking?

Check to see if the datacard is in the vehicle documentation?

Yes, i've checked the data-card and it has option 882

So i'd be asking the dealer why the alarm didn't trigger and to actually test it triggers after the glass is replaced (by turning on alarm and disconnecting the sensor)

Richard

Question I have is why isn't it triggering when I set the alarm now , whilst I have some temporary plastic covering the broken window...? the contacts are dangling down independently inside the back of the car.. sounds to me like something is awry...
