Just wondering if insurance companies offer some kind of bridge insurance to cover you for a second car while it is for sale?Could be an overlap of a couple of months or so.

Has anyone done this before?

Yes, they should all do it. It's called "temporary additional vehicle".

A couple of months is a little long for a temp ad vehicle.....2 or 3 weeks is viable but much more than that they'll expect you to insure it properly.

I'm doing the insurance quote thing at the moment and the bizzare thing is that the Admiral multicar quote (with both old and new cars added) came out around 30% cheaper than every other quote for just the SL500 alone.

Rather odd I thought... I wonder if the premiums will increase if I remove the second car from the multicar policy shortly after taking out the insurance?

have you read the thread on multi vehicle insurance started by roger jones back in november. it might be of use, i found the complete opposite with admiral .

Yep - done it several times, just ask to keep the old car covered while you arrange sale. I've only done for 2 weeks/1 month, not sure what they think about longer periods.

I did it a few years ago and was iirc £70 a month.

You can always insure a low risk "phantom" car that does not exist..

maybe a few years ago, not any more ,the tax, insurance and mot systems are to high tech these days .they would probably accept your money but then not payout in the event of a claim.

I had to insure two vehicles (our VW Sharan and the Vito that replaced it) in parallel for a couple of months. The cheapest/easiest option was to transfer the insurance to the Vito then take out a new policy on the Sharan - paid monthly. No NCD, but it qualified for a big 'multi car discount' (in fact it came to less than the previous annual renewal with max NCD!!). Then when the Sharan went we simply cancelled the policy. IIRC this was with Direct Line.

I think the 'temporary cover' ones are OK if it's just a week or two but they get expensive after that.

Hi Sp!ke,

It depends on how long you think you'll need the cover for - ie, how long are you keeping the CE?

Reason I ask is - have you considered classic insurance for the SL?

I'd think that you could get cover on the SL very cheaply - £200/300 perhaps at a guess, whilst not using any NCD. Might work out cheaper to insure both the CE on a regular policy and the SL on classic than just the SL on it's own, regular policy. Certainly is the case for me with the CLK55 - it's cheaper to insure both the CLK and my 124 than the CLK would be on it's own for a regular policy

Otherwise, if you want a regular policy for the SL, transfer the insurance over to the new car and then insure the CE as a 'temporary additional vehicle' for however long you need to. I've done this many times in the past, it doesn't seem to work out much cheaper by doing a longer length of time, so just cover it for a couple of weeks and renew it each time as you need to.

After a month or two, they might not be too keen on it but I've never been refused cover in this way before. Just explain to them that you're in the process of selling the car or whatever - it's all above board :)
