some delightful little bas**rds decided to break into our 230TE last night......

We got home from a gig about midnight, went inside and sat down for 10 minutes to drank a beer, then deciding to take the dog out for a walk and empty my gear out of the car I went back outside only to find the rear window smashed, the load cover twisted back and half of the gear missing.

Fortunately it's all insured so that's something to be thankful for.

You got to admire stupid criminals though - when we checked the car over this morning in daylight.....blood all over the rear door handle, load guard and carpets - the local police were so pleased - guess that's one crime they'll be solving pretty easily.

Here's the silly part though with the swabs they take for the DNA they have to send it off to be analyzed, the results are then sent somewhere else to be checked against the national database and assuming a match is found they are then returned to sussex police for action - a process that takes 28 days!!!!!!

Ho hum we wasted a day getting it sorted out. big thanks go to autoglass for turning up 3 hours earlier than they said, the local police for their help etc, MB Eastbourne who were so helpful and quick doing the estimate over the phone and getting it faxed to Chaucer for the repairs and sending a mobile valeter to clean any remaining blood spots from the interior and Chaucer insurance who reckon the claim will be processed in 2 days. Not so many thanks to prodential home insurance who were less than helpful - but hey they are being faced with a £10,000 payout for my missing guitar :)

Andy,

sorry to hear about your brush with these thieving little toerags. Hope that the boys in blue catch them, and that they get more than a few weeks in the sun for their crimes!

Must be some axe you've got for £10k - hope it's possible to replace......

Cheers.

actually it was a surprisingly "average" guitar in my opinion, just that everyone else seems to think they are valuable and collectable. It was a '63 Fender Strat. It's a guitar I've owned for years and never really considered it's value (apart from the insurance) as I had no real intention of ever getting rid of it. The insurance company run one of these "like for like" replacement schemes so it's up to them to offer me a choice of guitars to replace it, realistically the claims advisor said they would give me a set value and let me go shopping with them picking up the bill. I don't suppose it will be neccessary in the long run as there's a pretty specialist market for old strats so sooner or later it will turn up at one of the known dealers and no doubt it will eventually find it's way home.

Sorry to hear about your loss and damage. I just hope that they catch the toe rags who did it

sorry to hear about your bad news m8. :(
I hope the thieving sod is in a *lot* of pain

Sorry Andy....take the money, get a PRS and put the rest in the bank. Hope the thieves die of some new lingering disease. Maybe better if they aren't caught, they may have been chastised as children, which is why they stole your gear, and will be sent on a grand holiday to help them readjust.

Mmmmmmm - PRS - me like!! Don't suppose you can pick up a Dragon for £10k?

Pick up a nice PRS double cut, Les Paul Custom, new amp, and still have enough change out of £10k for a banjo......will make you feel a lot better!

:)

Andy,

I was sorry to hear this news too :( I hope Autoglass did a good job on the replacement and that the boys in blue catch the swines and get your stuff back.

Hmmm.

While we are on the subject of cars.

"Toerag". Isn't that also the name of the new Volkswagen ??

Hehe.

At least Mercedes seem to be sensible enough to spend more time on R&D than on developing stooooopid marketing names !!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Perhaps the fella bled to death about 100 yards down the road ... ??

Stealing a Vintage Strat, they probably will not be aware what they have in their posession until they try to off load it. Imagine the look on the second hand guitar shops face when they try to sell it for £100 with out realising the value. I suppose it has already been featured in your local newspaper regarding the age and value of it and making local dealers aware, if not put it in the lost and found ads quickly. A guy local to me had a very valuable vintage Les Paul nicked out of his car. Me I can only afford a 17 year old USA Strat plus, sold the Telecaster on E bay last week. I do hope you get the Strat back, I love them.

thanks for the support/feedback folks.....

the guitar was "recovered" last night - a friend of a friend who wishes to remain anonymous :) was offered it for sale in one of the local pubs - as well as telling all the local music shops we'd already put the word out it was nicked to a few of the known local "buyers" and one of them came good :)

Steve - Autoglass seemed to do a first class job - no complaints there so far - will find out when it rains :)

Can i sort of join the CLUB, Daughter took grandchild for a picnic yesterday at Bramber Castle, very quiet not many people around, came back to car to find n/s passenger window smashed and the dog food missing, nothing else, just doesn't make sense does it, again Autoglass are coming out this morning to replace it,she has to pay £50.00. Ian i don't suppose you and your dog were down this way??

Andy What state was guitar in, was it damaged, thats really more important than the car, hope its ok Best wishes mate Rob

Andy,

Understand what you mean about the guitar being average, for the life in me I can't get excited about vintage guitars. Had an old LP for years and all that was partucularly good for was making my shoulder ache.

Sorry Robert, nope not me or mine apart from which one tin is never enough. He loves kids though but we have to be careful, any more than two upset his stomach

A '63 Strat average................ compared to modern guitars the tone of genuine vintage pick ups through a good valve amp sound beautiful, my Strat as I said earlier is 17 years old and has gold lace pick ups fitted as standard and to me that is not even "average" compared to todays modern pick ups, you have a real beauty there and I hope it was returned unmarked so that you can enjoy it for many more years to come.

I disagree with you Andy, lots of modern guitars are really very good and incredible value for money. Had them all, Strats, Teles, LPs. I don't play much now but my son is well into music and I never cease to be amazed at the quality of the guitars that youngsters play nowadays.

tee hee - every time I call the strat average I upset the purists :) but at the end of the day it's a guitar with 40 year old electronics in it that aren't as good as todays high end pick ups no matter how you dress it up, they are noisy (as all single coils are) and lack the clarity (again imho) that the modern ones are capable of - call it "warmth" if you like but it's a matter of personal choice.

I'm not a great eletric player preferring my acoustics but the strat is in my opinion average. I've got a strat plus (USA original) and that ranks as awful, it's thin, lacking any "depth" and not what I'd class as any sort of value for money (I bought it at trade price through a contact at the importers and even then it was overpriced).

Now this next bit is really going to "hurt" I've got a strat copy as well, made by Fenix, it's got custom pick ups and a full floating schaller trem. Solid maple body (as opposed to the swamp ash strat) maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. It's heavier than the strat has a depth of sound and sustain that a Les Paul struggles to match and is crystal clear through any amplifier with a range of sounds that go from almost acoustic to a really gutsy blues sound with an amazing playability. For a cheap guitar the quality of workmanship is amazing and OK the electronics have all been replaced with high end aftermarket stuff it's value is still nowhere near that of a second hand strat plus yet everyone who has played it wants to buy it off me :)

the strat has a "cult following" but then so does the volkswagen beetle, the mini and anyone of a million different icons of a bygone age - it doesn't mean they are any good it just means that we remember them being good so we put up with their idiosyncrasies. The fact that Fender keep reinventing it and lowering the quality of each and every new model only helps reinforce the myth that a 40 year old guitar sounds and plays better than a well built new one :)

Got to agree with the PRS recommendations and if I relied on electric guitars the same as I do my acoustics then I'd have one but realistically the only times I play the electrics these days are either for fun or when I'm doing the odd gig for a friends band :)

Still nice to have it back though.

Every body to their own, if we were all the same or all liked the same the world would be very boring. Regarding the modern Srat, Tele and les paul, I didnt like my modern USA Tele until I replaced the pick ups, had a Les Paul, great if the boat sank and you needed a raft, but these are my opinions only, now my USA Strat plus with the gold lace sensors and steel roller nut and sperzels is in my own opinion the best guitar I have owned and after a recent trip to my local music shop I can honestly say that there is nothing else I really fancy, other than a PRS. The thing that I love about Fenders over other guitars that I have tried is the neck, so comfortable and easy to use.

See you at the Fender forum !

Andy, did you have the guitar from new and if so how much was it new out of interest.
