Broadband Supplier

As an aside John, you might want to get a line test done by someone other than your existing ADSL supplier.

Hi Simon,
Thank you very much indeed for the very constructive advice. Great minds think alike and I have indeed asked for a test from a number of providers but all had the same result :o :o or like Bulldog, who said I could not use their service.

The way I see it, if you don't ask, you will never know.

I am with tiscali I have 1mb but have never achieved that, my speeds vary from 280 to 940 (my best) on the tiscali forum it looks like speed or lack of it and loosing connection are main problems and lots are leaving but they are offering customers 2mb unlimited for £17.99. I also have friends with BT and they are not happy either. Join the lottery of ISPs.

Second to my post above I have been told that BT have a huge problem upgrading exchange lines as broadband becomes more popular because of all the new cheap packages, so variation in speeds is common unless you are lucky and live right on top of a very modern exchange. Tiscali customer services are trying to help everyone so I would not go so far as to knock them as I can not judge how other ISPs are doing.

Glojo tiscali are introducing new packages in Sep as below,512 (halfmeg) as been dropped
1. 1 Mbps @£14.99 with 2 GB monthly usage allowance
2. 1 Mbps @£15.99 with unlimited usage
3. 2 Mbps @£17.99 with unlimited usage
There is also a £19.99 1mb unlimited with free phone calls.

I'm with PlusNet too, excellent support (only ever needed it twice), now on 2 MB at about £21.50 / month with free domain name & hosting (can't remember how much webspace, although I've got quite a bit of that elswehere too)

Highly recommend PlusNet, have been tempted to try an 8MB provider cos I'm feeling greedy! Odd thing, I've got two numbers at home, one was within range & the other wasn't, they both come into the house / terminate in the same cupboard!

Just typical. I have asked Wanadoo for my MAC code to transfer across to Eclipse. I haven't signed up though with Eclipse so I might have a quick look.
Thanks very much

John

Edit:
Just contacted Tiscali and they cannot do anything until I have cancelled my subscription with my provider then as has already been stated the new offers are not available until 1st September.

£19.99 for a 1mb download and free telephone calls 24/7. However I take onboard the adverse comments.

Regards,
John

I have just logged onto adslguide and compared Eclipse, Tiscali and Wanadoo.

Unfortunately Tiscali are 'The Weakest Link'

I'm with Blueyonder; since 4 odd years now. Absolutely no troubles, they've even "upgraded" my service by 50% roughly a year back. The other three providers I've tried were AOL (I know, but it was my first year here...); Bulldog and MSN/Yahoo.

AOL couples well with a barge-pole, Bulldog were great, then they got alot more customers and just went down the drain. So much so that the ISP awards committee has withdrawn Bulldogs 2004 award. MSN/Yahoo are ok, but absolutely nothing special.

Blueyonder (not sure if they still offer my contract) but its unlimited.

FWIW I've been with Tiscali for some time, 150 kbps originally up to 512 now (allegedly the maximum that my line can support at the moment). No complaints about speed or availability.

Did you know BTB 500 that tiscali are dropping 512 sep I think so you may be lucky and get a free upgrade tp 1mb whether you can use it or not. (Tiscali broadband discussion forum - Mr Tibbs)

I tried to upgrade to 1 meg a few months ago when they had it on special offer for £1 a month less than I was paying for 512. But was told then that you couldn't register for a 1 meg service if your line didn't support it. So will be interesting to see what happens!
