looks like number 5 plug has had the hex part stripped off it.
the core is still intact.
is it possible to get this out without removing head or engine

I think you have the same engine as the CLS 320 cdi. So ,yes the glow plugs are changed without much hussle. You just take the glow plug out and put the new one.

he means that the GlowPlug has snapped off in the head, so its going to be a bit more involved than simply taking the glow plug out and replacing it. There is loads of threads on here for that same problem, do a search and good luck, I had the same problem on my 320 cls 4 years ago and just renewed the other 5 and left the broken in, started fine the only problem was the light didn't go out immediately after cold start

a lot more space on a 320cls
I know it can be drilled out

the question is has anybody done it without removing head or engine

done a search and nothing there for a vito

I have been here.

Number 5 I think is just about do-able without removing the engine. Wipers off. Top scuttle off. Fuel rail off. Its an **** but do-able.

To remove the turbo, its an engine out job.

thankfully turbo is fine
however no 6 needs changing aswell
it appears to still have the hex part intact

Yes we have them drilled out all the time still on the engine all you have todo is strip around the glow plug so they can get to it (fuel rail removed)

My Number 5 is faulty and I will swap the set, I asked the service department at MB and he said set the torque to 20nm to undo to prevent them snapping off, any more and bingo.
Not even looked at them yet but this summer job.

My mechanic gives them a spray and a tap before removal. lm not sure if it helps thou he seems not to break many. He has a hand of a jeweller but the filthiest work shop.

If they snap, its a specialist drilling job in a very very tight difficult area on the V6 vito/viano.

Hi guys (im new :) ) ive just changed a set of glowplugs (well 5 of them but i will come to that) in my CLK 320CDI and sheared the top putting a new one in,
I tentatively started it up and then took it for a spin, it seems to run ok (well better than it did as ive changed an o2 sensor too) but is their any issue in leaving it? will the cylinder be sealed properly? or should i get it out.

Also the 6th glowplug is sort of inaccessible, its very close to an electrical connect that is mounted to the rockercover/head with torx bolts, does anyone know of the top of their head what size torx socket i need to remove this so i can acquire one?

And finally :) last thing i promise, where would I find the Glowplug relay on a CLK? ive been advised to change that along with all the glowplugs.

The relay is at the front of the engine. Big cable on it. It's a square box.
