CLK 200 K. xj40. x300
Hi everyone.
I was driving my clk 200 and it suddenly started sounding like a tractor.
When I got home I checked it out, and could feel gasses blowing out near the down pipe joint in the engine bay.
I thought to myself, ok this is not so bad.
On further inspection it appears the manifold has broken, just above the down pipe joint, not so good after all.
Has this happened to anyone else? And any ideas on what might cause such a sudden failure.
There was no clue it was going to happen, the only thing i did think in the last few weeks, was that the car did seem to be a little louder than usual, but fractionaly, I thought I was imagining it ( optimism circuits kicking in, maybe).

I've had broken manifolds on two previous (non MB) cars.

The first was a 3.5 Range Rover I used 'off road', this manifold had split right in two and would have cost more to mend than replace. The cause of the break was more than likely impact to the exhaust system. I ended up buying and fitting a Janspeed manifold set.

The second was a 2.0 Honda Accord Aerodeck, this had cracks running through it but no splits so I managed to weld it up with my Mig welder. I do not know for sure what caused the cracks but suspect spririted driving and the K+N filter had something to do with it.

I hope my answers help, if the manifold is cracked right through you will need to replace it. If not it may be weld-able, good luck.

I had to replace the manifold on my 190E 2.3-16 when I had that. They are a very fancy design, made of tubular stainless steel with an unusual shape to them.

My one was an early design that was supposedly recalled in the early years, but unfortunately missed out. It cracked during my ownership (just above one of the welds right near where the studs go through :( )

Asked MB for a price (just out of interest!) - £1100+VAT

Managed to get a perfect second-hand one from a breakers yard - of the improved design for £95, a much more reasonable price ;)

My exhaust manifold was replaced by MB under warranty when the car was just over 2 years old, the catalytic converter also had to be changed as they said it got damaged due to the bad manifold. Whether that is true or not I dont know as I dont have much knowledge of these things.

i've just been asking the same question on another thread, i ust been in to see a performance engine tuner about doing some bits with my clk.

and his first question was has the exhaust manifold ever cracked, no i replied.

but he said he'd known of alot of problems with cracked manifolds, so i'm just waiting to see when mine will go.

no help i know but it must be a bit of a design fault on them.

The manifold cracked on my previous w202 c230k @ 100k miles. They said it was "not uncommon"

What is the mileage/age of the car?

i replaced my manifold last 8 months ago on my clk 23k cab not the cheapest part in the world paid £930 from the dealer they are prone on the clks to go

good luck mate

cracked

Sounds as if they may have dropped it off the ramp/jack to me but difficult to prove it if they don't own up. The down pipe could only be kinked by some direct force acting upwards, but another possibility is speed bump damage??

well i never shoot speed bumps, cant vouch for the wife though..lol
the kink is right by the gearbox, so hit from underneath ,or dropped...grr

cant blame the wife she wont own up either

looks like nice bill for me

To replace these clips the exhaust heat sheilds have to be removed but they would have to be pretty stupid to bend your exhaust in the process.

yup that right £550 fitted part from merc dealer , trade price but still, whys your so much ?
only done 45 k as well , i have been nice to it .

I have been told by MB that mine has a 'small' crack in it but it wont cause any problems so I have left it as is.
