BT Accelerator

You could try looking at Be. I am with them and their support and service has been second to none. A joint effort between them and me also made BT come out and fix an intermittent earth problem on my line, which means I now have a rock stable 16Mbit/s download and 1.5Mbit/s upload rate.

When I tap my postcode, it not available in my area.

You will get better speeds from a LLU operator on ADSL2+ like bethere, 02, SKY etc.

To find if there any in your local exchange use this link: SamKnows Broadband - Availability - Exchange Search

I was looking at BT advertisement on the Daily Mail, it boasts up to 20Mbps.

Anyone achieved this speed yet other than optic fibre?

It is upto 20mb, and yes you can get 20mb but you will have to be very close to the exchange.

BT are now upgrading to ADSL2+ which LLU operators have been using for years. BTs 20mb prices are more than other LLU operators and not many exchanges have been upgraded yet.

You can check if yours has here: http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=26957

I am using BE. They say I can get 10Mbit on my line but I rarely achieve more than 5Mbit :(

BE say it must be a fault in the house wiring (I have at least one socket in every room ) but I find this hard to believe as the house is only a couple of years old. I don't have a master socket that is recognisable. Anyone know how much it will cost to get BT in to test the house circuits?

£90 for the first hour, £35 half hour thereafter, better to DIY, all the things are already available at your disposal.

Poor speed can be caused by not using micro filters at all sockets where required, faulty micro filters, issues with internal wiring - ring wire being connected and also poor external line.

Master socket is the first socket where the line comes in to the house. Wont always be a NTE5 split type, can just look like a standard phone socket.

How can I tell which is the first socket? Is it necessarily the nearest socket to where the wiring comes into the house?

Yes look at the nearest socket where the phone wire comes into the house.

Once you have identified the master socket IMHO I would change it to a NTE5 type and fit a filtered faceplate. Technically the master socket is owned by BT and you shouldnt mess with it but BT charge silly money to change it to a NTE5 socket which is a simple less than 5 minute job. You can buy the BT branded NTE5 sockets on ebay. There is only 2 low DC voltage wires to connect to the socket.

The other way to do it is here: http://www.clarity.it/telecoms/nte5.htm It involves fitting the NTE5 after the master socket.

The problem with virgin is the network coverage is limited and they already cant handle the amount of traffic on their network at the moment offering upto 50mb.

BTs fibre to the cabinet trials have finished and areas are already being upgraded. This will offer upto 40mb via FFTC and 100mb where fibre goes direct to the premises.
