Thats great reading and I have read it several times now.

The car in question used was a CL with AMG kit but almost the same 6 sec to 62mph

Hmm, regrading cars from 2001. Now that will affect me next time I change car.

I can keep on polluting for now, but I'll have to be feeling rich to get a newer car so un-green.

Can't imagine that RS6 I had my eyes on is going to fare well.

My CLK320 will go to the new band M from current band F.

Maybe once the populace as a whole starts to feel the financial pain they'll take a bit more interest in the matter and start asking for some cast iron proof that their sacrifices are actually going to help matters

Most large cars are bought by companies. So first year taxation will be paid by businesses and not people. Average new large car driver won't see it because their employer will bear the cost.

The second and subsequent year charges will be paid by people. They're lower - what a coincidence. This is about squeezing people. Not saving the planet.

Some shifty git in the treasury has been extremely clever working out this wizard tax wheeze. And the politicians have been morally bankrupt enough to put their names on it.

If they were being honest the tax changes would possibly be no less painful but would be *revenue neutral*.

What am I missing ? How does the revenue raised by the British Government help to save the planet ?

While third world countries emit what they want, without tax increase ?

'Retrospective' taxation - must be the single largest con that any Govt has come up with.

Once the car has been manufactured, the VED could be levied at a million pounds a year and all that would happen is the car will be sold abroad and be driven around for the next ten years producing carbon elsewhere instead of here. No-one will scrap a car if it can be sold for more.

It won't reduce emissions one little bit.

In other countries, governments incentivise owners to upgrade to cleaner burning vehicles by offering cash amounts towards the new car on condition the old one is scrapped. At least here there is carrot as well as stick.

It's a deceitful practice and it's been part of the nasty cheap sneaky culture started by Brown. Darling's maintaining the dishonourable tradition of his master.

I don’t suppose I can interest anyone in the amazing A180cdi which currently lies in band C with emissions of 147gms/km paying £115 now and £120 in 2008.

On the new scale it will be in band F and still pay £120.

But it amazed me that even the diesel A class does not gain, although he said smaller, greener cars would benefit. All the petrol A class models will lose.

So really virtually every reasonable sized car in Britain will lose.

Maybe its me missing something here. The government are raising taxes but assigning a label to it that its about reducing CO2 to help reduce climate change - (Britain contributes what, 2% of world CO2?)

Looking at what they've done there seems to be 2 serious consequences:
1) the WIDENING of the gap between the "haves" and "have nots". In my opinion fiddling with the taxes as he has will not stop people with money buying the class M car - the increase on the cost of cars costing so much is not even a good "extra", nor will an extra couple hundred a year VED make any difference to them. they will continue to buy them and i doubt it will affect their use of the vehicle (and therefor quality of life) in any way.

The people at the other end of the scale will never have bought these cars, but they may be running something for the family - say mondeo size. the extra duty (and fuel costs) to these people will make a big difference and limit their choices about when to use the car - example, less days out for the family, not running the kids to brownies or scouts etc. Whatever it is it will effect these peoples quality of life, won't it?

The middle ground people may aspire to own class m cars but the rises will stop many of them or make them think twice anyway, thus increasing the gap bewteen the haves and have nots if you follow my drift.

2) the fact governments are now looking at motorists as even bigger cash cows, and seeking to reduce CO2 emmissions through taxing cars has meant a rush to look at Bio fuels.This has in turn pushed up the cost of foodstuffs as land is turned over to making crops for fuel, making the cost of living higher for us all, putting out of reach some "healthy options" foodstuffs to the less well off and meaning increased starvation for many in the third world.

so following this through the government ideology on using "climate change" as an excuse to tax us more results in an increase in inequality, less chance to eat healthy, and maybe starvation for many in the third world.

If my thinking is indeed right these connections don't seem to have been made yet by the media - the labour party increasing inequality and causing starvation to many just to raise taxes? Surely not!

"I'm a VW driver, I look up to the class M Car owner, because he is upper class and look down on Mondeo driver, because they are lower class."
