Hi gang,

My CLK55 has factory Xenons, which work great

I've never been into bulb upgrades and the like, but the sidelights are noticably 'yellow' by comparison to the Xenon-HID dipped beam headlights. Looks a bit odd to me :o

It appears from a brief search that the sidelights are H6W (433) type.

Has anyone got any recommendations for a suitable sidelight bulb upgrade to closely match the factory dipped Xenon lights? From a brief search online, I have found some Philips bulbs (Bluevision H6W - about £7.00 a pair) - are these any good?

Is it worthwhile changing any others at the same time? I seem to remember reading/hearing of some indicator bulbs that MB sell which have a silver coating, but flash amber - anyone know what type/fitment I need. Seems a good idea to do the lot at once.

Any tips or advice much appreciated :)

Cheers,

Will

Will,

The blue vision are useless. Your best bet is to got for H6W LED bulbs and then have a suitable resistor placed in the circut to prevent your bulb failure warning coming on in the dash.

Best of luck,

For the indicators you don,t have to go too MB for the silver indicator bulbs, just your local car accssorary shop or even Halfords, buy some silver coloured side repeaters too.
The only other bulbs i thought about replacing on my 43 was the reversing light bulbs and replacing them with LED ones as there much brighter, better visibility when reversing.

No side repeaters on the CLK , the repeaters are in the wing mirrors.

Sidelight bulbs, I tried about 2 or 3 sets, and the ones that were coloured blue i found useless, managed to find a set that are exactly the same colouring of my xenons, and they were the cheapest ones too (£2.99 per pair) the name escapes me ATM but i,ll go to the shop tomorrow if you are interested.

Have all CLK's got their repeaters in the mirrors? as i though it was only the later ones?

Just the later ones .... the 55 definately has.

Cheers guys for the suggestions so far.

I'm not really worried about out-and-out performance, these are sidelights after all and there's plenty of light output from the OEM HIDs.

Just looking for something that's a slightly better match in terms of colour than the standard bulbs? Don't really want to mess about with LED's and resisters etc if I can help it -only after a subtle upgrade :)

14Ben - What was the issue with the Philips Bluevision?

Are Osram Cool Blue H6W any better?

Ok,

Looks like it's PY21W for the indicator bulbs front/rear.

H6W for the sidelights.

Current thinking is something like Philips Silver Vision for the indicator bulbs:

Philips Silver Vision PY21W from Power Bulbs | Free Worldwide Delivery

And something like the Osram or Philips H6Ws mentioned above for the sidelights.

Just looking for a simple upgrade

Feedback welcomed, hoping to sort something out soon :)

Hi Will,

The issue with the BlueVision was they they made absolutely no difference. They still give off a very yellow tinted light.

As I mentioned, I went for LED sidelights that pretty much matched the exact colour of my xenons.

If you get the LED bulbs from a decent supplier they will often throw in the resistors and you then just need to have them soldered into the circuit . . . a five minute job that is well worth it when you see the end result - crisp white light all round !

Cheers

Thanks guys - I'll try and avoid those then. Are they seriously identical to the standard bulbs - sounds strange!?

Anyone tried the Osram ones? :)

Will

I have the Phillips Blue Vision on the E230 (also H6W), and had it on the CLK55.

While it is not as white as the OEM Xenons, it is a whole lot less yellow than standard bulbs.

I could not be bothered to mess around with LEDs and resistors etc.

To be honest, for £7.00 I might just give them a go.

If they're not what I'm after, they'll do as a spare pair for the boot or another car etc :)

I can't see them being absolutely no different to the standard bulbs? :o

(await the 'you were all right' post in a few days.. ;) )

Ha ha, I'll be waiting on the edge of my seat for that post Will :)

I'm almost positive i have a set of Blue Visions knocking about here Will...

Let me see if i can find them tomorrow and if so , they're yours.

Thanks Howard

To be honest, I'm not looking for a 100% OEM match to my Xenons, just something a little better than the regular bulbs, which I thought Blue Visions might have achieved?

I'm not expecting them to glow blue/white like LED bulbs might (which isn't what I'm after anyway), but perhaps be a hint less yellow than what's in there at the moment. Why on earth would they go to the effort of making them if they really were 100.0% identical to the standard fit?

Cheers :)

For the indicator bulbs, you might consider 'osram diadem' bulbs which were oem on some MBs with Xenons. They give a pale blue appearance when not illuminated & are much better than the egg yolk appearance imo
There are some nice pics of them on this thread if you are interested...

Sidelights have been debated many times. A common recommendation appears to be PIAA platinum bulbs

Will ,

I've found some generic 'bluevision' H6W bulbs .... don't think they are genuine Osram

However , i have found a genuine Osram box which suggests that i may have BlueVision in my sidelights ( which will fit yours ) , you are welcome to the generic ones and can try my ones in your car if you like ...

I think my generic ones came free with something to be honest , anyway , they're yours if you want them or if you want to try mine , i'm just round the corner.
