just been to see a French polisher to try to get my centre console restored, and may be a new layer of lacquer. And to my surprise the guy said that according to him it was not wood but plastic !!!! Do you think this is true or do you know any better ??

Aluminium? Where ? Haven't seen any.

Wood Laminate!

Definitely wood. Actually multi woodlaminate molding a bit like plywood. The laquered finish is such that it looks like plastic. Mercedes made a big fuss at the time saying it was from renewable plantations in their brochures .

Whoopsie, must only be on the W210 ones then, or was that a W211, cant remember, whichever it was it was a laminated section much like plywood that had aluminium sandwiched with wood.

Have a go at it yourself. I have on mine, its time consuming but you can do it.
The only aluminium I found was behind the heater control wood, the centre picec is indeed plywoo, with a vaneer on it.
