Hi

Going to look at a 97 c36 amg with 119kon the clock with full mb service history.

anything i should look out for? i no that gearboxes are an issue at this milage anything else

he asking around 3k for it 12 months mot 6 months tax.

Thanks

- Rust around the arches and locks
- Seized boot and passenger locks (no-one ever uses the key)
- Seized electric antenna if fitted
- Engine, ensure it's actually an AMG and not a standard car with a bit of bodykit
- Did I mention rust?
- Window tints: alot of AMGs have dark aftermarket (illegal) window tints on the front windows. I wouldn't take the risk of being stopped, but this one is up to you
- Worn seats/pedals: usually a clear sign of high mileage. At 119k it sounds unlikely the car is clocked though
- Did I say rust on arches? What about around the locks?

Off the top of my head:

Rust
Air con faults (it should blow ice cold)
Oil leaks from the head gasket etc
Check the condition of the exhaust and cats
Condition of the staggered 17" AMG wheels and tyres (about £2-300 for a refurb and £350-500 for a set of tyres)
Look for bodywork damage - ie crash repairs or badly repaired rust

That would be a good starter. 12 months MOT is a good sign but obviously not conclusive as to it's condition :)

This is what I was told before buying mine:
>- gearbox changes are clean, and no GB leaks
>- head gasket oil leaks are common.
>- ac works!
>- make sure cat does not rattle
>- rust on arches and bootlid ( you can live with this tho if its not too bad)
>- clunks on full lock (wishbone bushes)
>-MAS is another common thing to go (accelleration lag, lumpy idle)

Make sure you do a cold start, and listening very carefully for any rattling coming from the CAT. Check when the gearbox fluid was last changed.

Apart from that, check when the brakes/pads were last changed, cost me £300 to get the front pads and disc done. Check the tyres a new set of rear tyres will cost around £250-300 for a decent make.

If you are serious about it, I'd consider getting a local garage/merc dealer to check it over, will probably cost only an hours labour and will definately be worth it. Call the garage that last serviced it and maybe get them to check it over.

. . . . . . and TWO keys. :D

Why don't you post the advert?
Someone may have been to seen it already, or a kind soul might take a look for you.

Just seen it over on Pistonheads - looks promising, could be a lot worse from the first impression :)

If it's got full MBSH, a year's MOT and a clean body/interior/wheels etc (looks ok in the photos) it seems like a good buy to me.

Best of luck,

Will

Details are a bit sparse in the advert though.

Details are a bit sparse in the advert though.

Sometimes adverts like that turn up gems though - not everyone with nice cars is good at advertising!

Conversely, I've seen some way OTT adverts for completely 'average' cars many times.

Only a phonecall and inspection will reveal the true quality of the car itself IMHO.

Bought it in the end .... was near enough mint!a little pacth of rust on the front wings. engine is really smooth, stacks of paperwork . immaculate interior. power is all there, its been really cared for.

Sounds nice. I would think W202 wings are fairly easy to find, must be plenty in scrapyards now.

Quite a lot of car for £3k or whatever you managed - I remember back in my W202 days when C36s & C43s were £15-25k+ cars.

Looking forward to more pics/details when you have time :)

Excellent news - well done. Good luck with it. Keeping the "E" as well?

I know someone with plenty of w202 wings , but we aren't allowed to talk about it .... ;)

'The man with no name'?... ;)
