Buying an SL60 and/or R129 Pano Roof - Strange sellers or strange buyer (me!!!)

LOL...very funny Lee. I guess you have to keep your sense of humour in that case.

Yeah, it used to really really annoy me but I now see it as part and parcel of the game.

I do try and put as much info in the advert as possible so as to reduce the inane questions, although they still squeeze through the net and manage to come up with some crackers.

Indeed same as me. Do as work as possible day one and often you find you get asked less questions by less people. As soon as people have to work hard they start to look/work harder & ask things they would probably not have done if the ad was better in the first place. I guess it is all down to being open, honest and transparent. When sellers hold back or are economical with the truth then it gets found out you always wonder what else lurks underneath.

The whole reason I often get my brother to sell my cars for me. It is a horrible painful time for most. At least I am getting close to my ideal full garage now so shouldn't need to change much soon. Got a Focus ST-3 that I may need to move on soon. Hoot of a car but is not really my sort of thing. I took it in when I sold my E55K.

Just need a nice SL60 to replace the SL500 then I'm in a good place. I think it is likely I'll just keep the SL500 it seems though.

What you driving these days Lee...still got the XFR? Like it? Keeping it?

It's been with me for 13 years, I'm very much attached to it I'm afraid!

Fair enough...I can see why. Lovely piece you have there. Keep it for another 14 ;)

I should have been less impetuous and kept my SL60, done the work Jay has done to get it right & I wouldn't be in this predicament.

I have seen the SL60 in question around a year ago. It is a decent car but I definitely don't think it is the car for you as you sound quite particular/fussy. And rightly so.

The blue interior really doesn't compliment the car though, mushroom would have suited it perfectly.

That's the intention, although if I keep racking up the miles I know at some point it'll need a full rebuild.

Love it, absolutely love it.

Only thing I'll be replacing it with will be a QP, probably September time once I sort out my insurance.

Good to hear. Always fancied an XFR but always wanted a QP too! Only quandary is earlier QP DS or later ZF Auto? Then you starting looking at a 4.7 over a 4.2 then all of a sudden the price changes a fair bit.

Definitely worth trying the XF-R, I can't find fault with it in any way shape or form.

It'll be a ZF QP I go for, simply because the wife wouldn't know how to drive the DS.

I do like the look of that 4.7 S on the Maser forum but I'm still enjoying the XF-R.

Lhd not ideal but certainly worth a look. Any chance you can let me know where/details please. Thanks Dean.

The car belongs to a friend in Brentford. I would describe it as A1 condition. I drove it myself a few months ago and it's an absolute peach. I don't think you'll find fault with it.

I bought the said blue sl60 about 3 weeks ago

Since I'm London based it was a quick trip to look and turned into buying ! I had it checked by a mercedes specialist and was with them whilst it was on the ramp

It foes need some work which I'm in the process of doing

The seller was an honest business man and I got on well when we met and all the service checked out which is why I decided to go through with the deal .

You are all correct though he didn't know the detail about what the sl60 really was. His mate told him don't buy the 600 as they are not a special edition and for sure he bought it as an impulse purchase 9 moths ago . He made a profit and I wasn't ready to buy 9 months ago so I'm happy with the deal I got . I told him it only has the duck tail rear spoiler not the rest of the amg kit so yes he really didn't know what options the car came with. But that's fine this is why I paid to check the car out.

I had been after an azurite blue car and I actually don't like the face-lift ed looks ! I agree it should have had mushroom leather but beggars can't be choosers !

My history with sl60 goes back to 1995 when a Glasgow car dealer I knew had an azurite with grey leather car ... it was stunning... I wanted one ever since. It too only had the rear boot spoiler.

I Also believe that Mercedes lent this very car back in 1995 to a charity dinner my dad organised in Scotland (my dad did a lot of business with Merc) and I sat in it aged 14 or thereabouts ... unless anyone else knows of another blue with blue leather Pre face lift as I've not seen pics of any others. Ps i know of at least 2 or 3 azurite with cream mushroom leather
And one of those lives in Pimlico!

We now have 3 sl s in the garage and all are pretty face lift !

Congrats & well done.

What work did/does this one need to get it up to scratch?

I've only been after an azurite blue one for 20 years! I would like to think I'm the most obsessive sl60 person on the forum ! Finally got one! As much as I love my 500 it's been nagging me for years...

The car -

It has an minor oil leak which I will attend to and will be expensive engine out job but I don't mind. In comparison to my ferrari it's peanuts ! I amended the deal price to an extent !

Needs air con compressor not a big deal

Track arms just been done and couple of other bits around the suspension which I've now had done.
Hard top paint is a little scruffy but liveable but I may respray at some point

Engine wiring harness was done in 2011 thankfully!

It will need a few other little bits which im going to do but its pretty good ...I've seen 100s of SLs over the years and i'd say frankly it's a good car

He put tinted windows on it which I shall be removing!
