Begone oh heretic who is asking about indulging in the black arts and vile ritual of the darkest aspect of the dark side.

Welcome to the forum my friend.

But.............

I cant help feeling this question might be better posted on a BMW forum?

Why ask this on a Mercedes Forum?

Surely a BMW would be more appropriate!!!

Also I get 20mpg+ in an ML500 on a sensible run, although less around town.

You're a day late for questions like that!

I got a feeling this post could be one day late..........................

edit...........beat me to it..............

To actually offer one smidge of perhaps useful advice............

About 6 months ago I did have a minor brain siezure and actually contemplate an X5.
I looked into it and after about a day of searching and sorting I completely dismissed the idea on these grounds................
1. Depreciation
2. Fuel economy (or lack of)
3. Depreciation
4. VED band
5. Depreciation
6. Insurance costs
7. And lastly, depreciation.

So I continue quite happily with my W203......................

Oh no wrong site!

maybe but any experience of failing auto boxes in my ML270 otherwise I would be looking at an X5!

Hello

When I looked at changing my 330 BMW for a SUV I considered an X5, I don't do the miles to warrant a Diesal so petrol it would be, I was already on the BMW forum and general answer was to go for the 4.4 V8 as its the same as the 3.0 petrol fuel wise. I just though after driving one its too similar (dash, inside) to the 330 I had.

As for the comments below:-

1. Depreciation (All cars depreciate depends what you pay some 3.0i X5's are below 10K work on 3K a year and thats not a lot its actually a lot more) then throw it away.

2. Fuel economy (or lack of) Agiain depends on your use, I only do 7K a year so getting 20 mpg or 35 mpg isn't an issue if its what you want?

3. Depreciation see one

4. VED band / I do think this is a misconception that large off roaders cost an arm and a leg, it goes of the CO2 so my last car the 330 (small ish car) was in the same group as the ML ?? no difference then.

5. Depreciation / See one

6. Insurance costs / I swaped a BMW 330 convertible group 17 for a Mercedes ml350 group 17. Insurance I saved over £300

7. And lastly, depreciation / See above

ooh and you are better to join the BMW forum :)

Do X5's depeciate a lot?

I've looked from a distance from time to time and apparently X5 prices have recovered somewhat over the last few months, with dealers still easily able to sell all the good used examples they can get.

Had the X5 3.0L petrol when they first launched the car - I'm sure you will love it, I did, it's a great drive. Consumption was approx 22MPG though. (my CLK diesel is 45MPG which takes some of the sting off the fuel price increases)

Can easily do better than this. I had a manual one and I assume you'll be looking at an auto. I got 23mpg from mine, and in BMW tradition I drove it like I stole it. Being gentle it would touch 30mpg and do 25mpg easily.

Don't for for an auto unless you must with the 3.0i. The auto will sap power and lower the fuel consumption on what is a reasonably punchy car and bring it down a notch to a gutless sluggish car. There has been numerous gearbox issues (including total failure) with the pre facelifted X5s due to BMWs sealed for life gearboxes. The manual car is naturally free of these issues. A post facelifted car is a better bet, manual and auto as these are 6spd cars.

I had a 4.4i and apart from power is worse than the 3.0i car unless you do a lot of motorway miles where the taller gearing makes it more economical than the shorter geared 3.0i . Its nose heavy so doesn't handle as well, guzzels fuel around town (seen 7.9mpg regurlaly from my old car). I miss the 3 litre one I had, but not the 4.4i one.

A good forum to join is x5drivers.co.uk and x5world.com and they give you lots of X5 tips. Its a great car so don't let the badge put you off.

In my experience the 3.0 is way underpowered and will do less MPG than the 4.4, especially on a long motorway run where the 6 cyl will be struggling to push the beast through the air - all IMHO of course. Ours is a 2004 4.4 so this probably makes a difference.

I averaged 18 mpg in my 2003 X5 3.0i auto.
Could do 27 on a run.
Good cars.
Colin.

I had both.

The 4.4i didn't handle as well but was the faster car, but IMHO the 3 litre was just, well better. Enough power (mine was a manual) and the MPG was better 95% of the time unless doing 65mph on the flat where the V8 car with its taller gearing was more frugal (by 1-2mpg so not much). In town the V8 struggled to get 8mpg whereas the 3.0i would get at least 12-15mpg. The 3 litre car, in my usage pattern of mixed driving was the substancially more frugal car, and fast enough for what it was. I still miss it

Why not just buy the diesel, pref. a facelift, if your budget allows it. It pulls much better than the 3 litre midrange and is way better fuel-wise. Ok it doesn't sound so nice, not really louder, but not so musical a soundtrack. With a power upgrade it's a quick vehicle. I used to get over 20mpg in town, and average 30 in a Le mans model with the larger wheels & tyres too.

Costs more but it will also retain its value better when it comes to selling time.

My wife usually drives the X5 and her average on the school run (6 miles - mostly traffic) plus local shopping etc is 19 - 22 mpg. We have had 26-28 on long runs, which I think is totally acceptable for a 2 ton 4x4 that will hit 60 in under 7 seconds. My cousin had a non facelift V8 and it was less economical, by around 15-20%

I have nothing against the 3.0i nor the diesel, I happen to think all X5 are great, I just dont think there is enough running cost difference between the 6 cyl and V8 Cyl petrol engines to justify the 3.0i as a viable purchase - without doubt a facelift (if poss) diesel is the sensible choice - all IMHO of course.
