buying and driving back a german bought car

Ive always wanted to buy a classic merc from germany and drive it back here. I did look into once but couldnt really see a way to get the car insured first because it would be on german plates and my insurance company at the time wouldnt insure a non british registered car. As i remember, there was an insurance company i spoke to who would register it with the vin number but only once i was on british soil. Any advice appreciated, ive seen a nice 500e im tempted by.

direct line insured mine with the vin only. so did gladiator but only when it got to the UK
You can always get a german green card (valid for europe)from ANWB/adac for a few days, or any german insurance company to cover you for the trip back
