Thanks for that. I actually paid £300 which included a box mounting replacement. I've just had the engine oil done this morning by a different mechanic and he pointed out that the gasket hadnt been changed on the box and he obviously says its highly doubtful that the filter has been changed. Since this is my first automatic car and this seems like a stupid question but would a Mercedes specialist change gearbox fluid without replacing the gasket and filter??

No , a merc specialist who is still in business wouldn’t not change the filter and gasket

The previous pics are of the gearbox which was supposedly serviced 3 weeks ago. Today's mechanic says the seems around the gasket are far too dirty to suggest it was changed so recently?

The filter cannot be seen from outside... what makes you think it hasn't been changed?

The mechanic that serviced the engine this morning thought it was very strange to not replace the gasket as part of gearbox fluid change. He looked closely at the seem and bolts and suggests that the box hasn't been opened for a while (definitely not 3 weeks ago).

So what you are saying is that you are not even sure that the mechanic changed the ATF at all?

They're guessing he's just drained the old ATF and pumped fresh back in as the bolt for draining looks like its been torqued recently whereas the other bolts and the seem from the above pictures suggest the box hasn't been opened for wiite a while?? Crazy. I've been hoping for 2nd opinions before I confront him.

If they drained the entire ATF including from the Torque Converter and the Heat Exchanger, then the ATF should be crystal clear and look brand new after only 3 weeks. You can ask the other garage to sample a small amount.

What do you think from the above pics??

Doesn’t look like it was done in the last year to me
Thanks for your opinion. Couldn't see why anybody particularly a Mercedes specialist would possibly just drain and pump new ATF in without changing filter and seal???

The weather has been pretty poor recently, lots of rain washing road dirt, mud etc on to the underneath of the car. Have you looked closely at the sump bolts for signs of recent movement?

What did your invoice list?

He didn't supply an invoice and my fault for not requesting one. He is very local to me and was recommended by a family friend. The bolts that hold the bottom of the box together looked like they hadn't been torqued for a long time. The drain bolt however did look like it had been worked at??

He must have detailed records of the work though and money paid ?
I'll not know until I confront him on Monday? The mechanic who I used this morning to service the engine was having a general look over the car for me as I'd just purchased it. And when I'd mentioned that the box had been done 3 weeks ago he looked at it and questioned whether it actually had been hence the photos he took.

Just disgusted lads as I dont mind paying top dollar for a decent job.
