Hello all

I'm thinking of buying one of these with 50,000 miles on the clock - 1998 R

I could do with knowing any known problems/faults as well as details of the fuel economy of this particular model.

Thanks a lot - WAF

It's been discussed here peviously.

Go for the 200 as the 180 is underpowered so noisier and uses more fuel as a result. If you can stretch to it buy a 250 TD, you get the best of both worlds, performance and economy.

Ok, I'm biased but if anyone can proove me wrong!!

Jimmy...help!!

Agree with Dieselman ..... nothing sluggish about the 250TD !!

All depends on what you will be using the car for .... do you really need the extra power ? Happy enough with my C200, but never driven a standard C180 to compare it with.

C 180 cars

I drive a 1994 C 180 4 speed auto and it goes adequately for me and wifey. However when we are forced to take 2 more people, it gets a bit too heavy for the motor especially when we have to go on hilly roads where the kick down is activated often to keep up speed. It is very disturbing and a bother. I also drive a 5 speed auto 1997 upgrade and this is a lot better with gear changes done by itself without kickdowns most of the time unless very steep upgrades. This one seems to have a greater kick in power, quieter motor at idle and takes heavier loads easily. It revs about 2600rpm at 100kph while the 1994 does this at 3000rpm or just under. Why I don't know. My Camry does it at only 2200rpm. Maybe its the gear ratios, power or overall weight. The Camry is of course a 2.2ltr.

95 C180

Nothing to complain of up to now. Does the job in hand. You wont be dazzled by the performance. Never really driven with a full car but I am more than happy. :D

I guess it depends on what else you have driven though.

Lucky enough to have owned both in the past.

When we lived in Germany had a C180 sport new from the factory in 1998. Never had any problem with the performance, you just realise it is not a sports car and drive in a more Mercedes style :D

Replaced that with a 250TD sport, and did enjoy the extra performance but found that because of this seemed to do a similar distance on a tankfull as the 180.

Saw over 140mph  on the speedo of the 180 on a particularly long down hill section of autobahn. Palms were a little sweaty afterwards though! :D
