This is something I did a while back and thought it might interest the 124 lovers.
My 300CE has a genuine Mercedes exhaust system that I had fitted about 20 years ago. It is still in excellent condition and is very quiet, too quiet.
So I cut open a spare rear silencer to see how it was made.

It looked quite restrictve. I had some spare exhaust pipe and welder so i made a pipe to totally delete the rear silencer.

More to follow .

The standard silencer has a 64mm inlet and twin 47mm (approx.) outlets. This pipe was 64mm all the way. It was very boomy at low revs where the auto sits for most of my driving. At higher speeds we left the noise behind but the car was no quicker.

Next up I bought some 64mm bends

and a silencer with twin 64mm outlets. I could only find one straight through silencer short enough to fit .
A lot of cutting and welding and I made this.

I wanted the outlets to exit from the cut-out in the bumper as standard

I bought an e36 once with the fabled ‘rear silencer delete’ and Christ was it boomy and awful

The silencer was advertised as a race silencer using reflectors to reduce noise but not restrict flow. This system was quieter than the pipe but also boomy at certain revs. It was quicker than the standard exhaust though.
I decided to cut it open to modify it !!

I cut out the reflectors

I welded the perforated pipe onto a Y shape in the now empty box.

Then I packed it with wadding.

I also like square tail pipes so I cut up some box section I had and welded everything together.

The new silencer is only slightly nosier inside the car and there is no boom. Outside, it has a deeper burble at idle and a nicer ,louder tone. It is also pulling better at higher revs.
Success
