Hi guys,

Wonder if someone could give me some information. I am going to be buying a C180 (1.8 only due to insurance), year 1998. I believe this is the year that the model was updated. I have been trying to find out what changed besides the 5 speed automatic. Would anybody have any links ?

Looking forward to getting into owing a mercedes again. Had a 1991 190E for a number of years and a 1973 230CE which was very special. Since then got into SAAB 900 classics but miss the german engineering and especially the 'cockpit' layout.

Thanks guys...

Exterior styling:
- Updated front/rear bumpers and side skirts
- Rear light Clusters
- Sublte change to bootlid

Interior was updated too..

C230K engine was introduced to replace the C280 and Turbo disel engine C250 was replaced with new C220 CDI engine technology...

I'm sure rest of the W202 guys on here will be able to give you much more additional info

Thanks. Any more info would be great. The updated front bumper makes a big difference to the car. Probably going to try to go for a silver model as seems to look good in that colour.
I guess i should try for an elegance model. Is the only difference between classic, esprit and elegance is equipment levels rather than outside trim.
Thanks.
Am looking at carzone.ie but have thought about importing one from England to Ireland. Any good second hand car sites in the UK

C230k was introduced in 1996, C280 changed from I6 to V6 with the facelift.

I'd also look at a sport model, as you get slightly stiffer suspension, carbon fibre trim and nice 16" alloys, IIRC after the facelift all the models came with A/C and all round electrics, the only difference between the models is trim level and alloys.

A good site to look at is www.autotrader.co.uk

I remember years ago seeing a sport model and though the facia looked real good. So does the elegance just get cruise control extra ?

had a look around ( spent the whole day at work at this) and figure i could save about 2,000 Euro on importing from the UK. Will go for this option as would be a good experience and bit of fun aswell. Probably will go for the estate model(auto of course) as its rare here in Ireland and i always liked the pratical nature of estates having once owned a 4 litre station wagon in Oz. (500K ex-taxi LPG!). And the estate version will be worth the hassle of importing when it comes to selling. Like the petrol blue or black for the estate colours...

So I guess for a 98 estate would i be right in looking for a price between 3K and 4k sterling depending on mileage and trim levels. Anything I should know?
Did the estate get the facelift in '98 aswell as the saloon ? Is it worth trying to get leather ?

For those who are interested, the Irish revenue calcualates the value of a 98 model (with 70 miles) as 10,739E (£7,200) , import tax of 25% = 2684E (£1807)

.....so cost of importing a £4,000 model is max 8,000E whereas an irish model (and near impossible to find estate) would be about 10,500.
Or not more

The face lift ones got a five speed auto. 1.8 needs to be worked hard to get it going. Goes without saying, but make sure it has a FSH and no water or oil leaks. Big single wiper will make you cry if it breaks - it should be smooth and near noiseless. My old C180 Classic had 160K and ran nicely. Now have a newer, swankier C200 Elegance. I like the wee extra bits like the alloys, etc.

When I ordered my car in Feb 2000 it had the following as standard to the range: ie Classic model.
ABS with Brake assist, ASR, Adjustable steering column, Air Conditioning with dust filter, Alarm and immobiliser, Seat belt pre tensioners with seat belt force limiter, catalytic converter, Electric heated door mirrors, first aid kit, Automatic with cruise control and speedtronic, Arm rest, 4 electric windows, tinted glass, outside temp display, power steering, eight loud speakers, Central locking with Elcode, Assyst, and side airbags.

Elegance models added:
15in Alloys
Exit lights
Illuminated vanity mirrors
Leather steering wheel
Leather gear knob
Locking wheel nuts
rear armrest
plus wood trim and chrome stripes around the outside

Sport models
15in Alloy wheels
lowered sports suspension
leather wheel and knob
Body coloured bumpers
Carbon trim

I've added all of these subsequent to buying the car!! (Obviously carbon replaces wood etc)

Plus
Folding mirrors
Auto dimming rear view mirror
Rear blind
Fire extinguisher
Sump shield
ICE and Media player

Excluding AMG kit which I am unlikely to fit, I have only got

headlamp wash wipe, parktronic, rain sensor, and xenons to go...allowing for the fact that leather heated memory seats needs a new interior and I cant see me doing that!!

Incidently, a metallic C200 classic auto cost £24,341 but had I ordered it with all these options you can add:
Wheels and tyres £1871.45, ICE £300, vanity mirrors £81.37, Leather wheel and knob £183.61, RVM £222.09, exit lights £73.79, Fire extinguisher £101, Sump shield £117.38 = £27,291.69

then add

Exterior
5th Mirzam C class OEM spare wheel
Advantgarde Grill OEM
Chrome Wheel centres OEM
Sport DTM badges OEM
Debadged rear
Private Number plate
Boot lock cover
MB valve covers (nicked twice)
Xenon Osram Silver star Headlight bulbs
Xenon Silver star Main Beam bulbs
Silver indicator bulbs
PIAA side light bulbs
All bodywork colour coded

Interior
Pop up cupholder OEM
Chrome gear surround
Chrome heater dial surrounds
Bose Speaker badges OEM
Traffic Master Mk2 Talking version
Nokia Handsfree (custom install)
Door end lights (Red)
Puddle lamps OEM
S Class door reflectors
Bling key body change
Actros Ice axe multitool OEM
Mercedes Benz Mats OEM
MBClub Official Pedals OEM
MB Rear Blind OEM
MBClub Metal Tax Disc holder
MB Carbon Sport Dashboard
Power Socket in rear for DVD

Engine
Superchipped and Rolling road tested.
K and N Filter
Bosche plugs
Full size bonnet liner
Gear box undertray shield

..........that adds another £1000, call it £28,300.
EDIT. I forgot 10GB Hardrive, Smartnav and folding mirrors! Better add another £1000!

and before someone says but you could have bought a C200 Sport in the first place, no I couldnt because I couldnt afford it the. But I have enjoyed doing 43 mods so far

Thanks R2D2.

Yep guess sports model is the way to go. Would anyone have any pictures of the carbon trim.Would really appreciate it.

Would you agree that a 1998/1999 C180 sport would probably look best in silver with black leather. Any other nice combinations. Just thinking what would go well with the carbon trim and the 'sports' nature of the model.

Nice. Carbon trim really does the trick. Was by chance talking to my mate who house mate imports cars from the UK so purchase may be sooner than expected. :bannana:

But still confused on one thing. Did the estate get updated in 98 along with the saloon ?
