This morning my C180 auto 65k miles went in to limp home mode. 5 days ago the radiator exploded while in traffic jam due to over heating  . I replaced the radiator , water pump and viscous fan. Temperature has been ok ever since. 2 days ago the gear box started to clunk a bit when shifting into or out of drive and reverse. Today the acceleration capacity decreased completely and gears no longer shift. Max speed 20m/h even at 5000 revs. Any ideas before i hung my boots  . My bank account is in red

Have you checked the gearbox oil level?

It could be low enough to be stopping it working properly.

I have. When cold the level is just over the lower mark and when hot it gets to the second mark.

Maf? I had a similar problem mine about 6 months ago. Car was SOOO slow, jerky gear changes etc. Get it hooked up to a STAR diagnostic box at a garage and see what comes out....

Is it possible that some fluid contamination took place when you changed the radiator?

check obc and gearbox level with a warm engine and in all gears with engine running
what fliud did you use
should only be mbz

I took the car to a mechanic with a star plug. Diagnosis showed something to do with the gear box like maximum...... not reached. Came up with code 050 and 151, both codes point to limp home mode with half of dozen of possibilities. The mechanic suspects a fault with the solenoid and a metal plate in the gear box, root cause may being the very hot ATF. The me

The fault codes were erased or cleared, the car drove well but for only for the fist 100 meters. It's now back to limp home mode.
Next step will be to replace solenoid and metallic plate possible on Monday or Tuesday (it the price tag is in reach)
