W211 E200 K - they don't make em like they used to, which is why it's been replaced with a 911 :)
Hi - I'd appreciate some help and advice please.

I've just entered the world of Merc ownership by buying a 97 C180 Esprit Estate Auto for my wife. Picked it up on Saturday and after driving it over 200 miles home I have to say that it is an excellent car.

It's done 97k but has a full main Dealer stamped service book. Last service was at 86000 (from memory). The missus only does 2000 miles per year so I figure that a high miler isn't a big issue and this thing looks and drives like 30,000 miles!

The dealer I got it from said he thought it had a chain rather than cam belt, but unfortunatley I'm a bit clueless on the mechanics.

Does anybody know?

Do chains need changing after a specific mileage like belts?

If so at what mileage?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers
OG

Yes it's chain driven.

Should last a lifetime as with all chain driven engines. Specialist engines like those in the E30 BMW M3 needed the chain changing at about 100K, but that was to save the monster cost of a new engine.

Yours should be fine. If you start hearing a rattle which is a sign of play in the chain where it has stretched after about 150K miles, then think about having it changed!

:) Great, thanks for the reply Graham, appreciate it.
