Hi Guys,

I'm a newb to this forum, so firstly, hello to all.
I have a strange problem with the central locking on my 1996 C180. I've followed the similar threads on the forum but none of the problems are exactly the same as mine.
The problem first manifested itself as the front doors would lock but the rear doors wouldn't. They would if I held down the button for longer, hmm. Same with my spare fob.
Then all locking packed up. I changed the batteries in the fob and it worked again, once, then stopped again.
I tried disconnecting the battery (one solution on another thread). No difference.
I tried resetting the system using the 2 clicks and turn the key to position 2. It worked. After resetting it all the doors unlocked and the open close button on the dash worked a treat, all doors opening and locking perfectly and without the engine on so it was using the vacuum pump. Great thought I. I used the keyfob to lock the car and again only the front doors locked, then nothing worked again. I tried to reset the system again and it doesn't seem to work/reset with either fob.
Any ideas please would be very welcome, MB at Newport want £87.50 + vat per hour to look at it.
Ouch!

Hi
I hope for your sake that it is not the same problem I had,I did have starting problems with mine as well though.

I had a diagnostic done on mine and it turned out the immobilizer locks and windows etc are controlled by the ECU and due to the fact yours is working sometimes points to the motors etc are working ok.

You may be lucky and the ECU just wants resetting but mine needed a new ECU.

why dont you just get a normal alarm fitted and get that one stripped out by an alarm fitter... You could spend a huge amount at dealer rates and those alarms are rubbish anyway..

jaymanek

That is sound advice if mine goes wrong again that is what I intend doing due to the fact it works off the ECU it has got to be the best thing.

There are some good alarms out there for reasonable money

Yes for anyone in the area i can get CAT1 AutoWatch fitted for £329. These are fantastic alarms, much better than the 90's MB rubbish..

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the response but I don't think I have an alarm fitted, it's just an immobiliser. If I do need to get the ECU reset, where and how do I do it please? Did I mention the car is French, I'm over here working. I don't think it being first registered French should make any difference, (apart from the fact that the French are tight fisted so probably didn't pay for an alarm in the first place. Is this possible? To have just an immobiliser?
Cheers,
Geoff

Hi Geoff

Regards ECU reset a good indi with the proper equipment can reset it for you if you can't find one it will have to be main stealer.

I live in Bristol UK and the main stealer charges £98.00 to check and reset the ECU.

Regards the alarm have you tried opening the car with the key or if you try jacking the car up with the doors locked if it is the same as mine this will cause the alarm to go off.

Thanks Norman,

I can open the door with the key and drive the car, no
alarm goes off. Just had a bit of really bad news, I went to the petrol station and the filler is now locked shut, I can't put any petrol in it, before it was stuck unlocked until my little play with restting the system.
Oh pooo

Hi Geoff
This is the emergency procedure for the saloon car to manualy unlock your petrol cap.

Hi Norman,

The procedure you mentioned hasn't displayed, could you post it again please. Thanks. :bannana:

Norman,

You are a wonder, thanks very much. I can now fill up my seriously empty car, on the yellow light no less. One last question, is the ECU unit mounted in front of the right hand side seat on the bulkhead where the water collects? I would say passenger side but then mine is a left hooker, it would be the drivers side on a UK car. The reason I ask is that it looks like it has got a soaking from all this Welsh rain we've had, the drain looks blocked as there are a lot of leaves in there under the "ECU" if that is what it is.

Cheers and thanks again,

Geoff

Hi Geoff

When you lift your bonnett the ECU is situated on the right hand side as you look into the engine compartment at the back,it is the black box with about 6 screws in it,

If you want a picture sent I can do it tomorrow for you.

Hi Norman,

Yep, thats the beastie, except on my car it's on the other side as it's a lhd model and all the steering stuff etc is on the rh side.
Thanks again for all your help.

Geoff

Hi, I've got similar issues with the central locking on mty C43, can someone please advise on this emergency procedure to get the petrol flap unlocked, I don't want to thave to force it open tomorrow to get to work!!

you will have to pull out the lining on the right side of the boot and feel for the petrol tank lock and pull it out by hand.
