Hi all,

I've searched through all the old posts, but can't find the same problem and therefore solution, so hopefully someone out there knows.

a) I've a 93 C180, (and still have no idea what these W123 no's mean).
b) I do not have any remote central locking ie No fancy button to press to lock the doors from my car keys.
c) I do not have the fancy folding down headrests
d) I do have the button on the console to press if i'm in the car.

Problem

1) All doors except the front passenger door, lock when I use my key in the drivers door. Why might this be happening??? I presume i have one of those vacuum systems i've read about... so how does it work???

2) Added to this the lock for the fuel cap, does not work and a motor, trying its best to work sound is coming from behind the fuel cap somewhere. Is this something I can fix and how??

3) Finally and more intersestingly, when I'm inside the car and press the locking button on the console, both rear doors lock, the motor once again is noisey coming from the fuel cap area of the car, is doing its best to lock the rest - (Drivers and front passenger, and probably the fuel cap too).

What is interesting about this though is that with the slightest of assistance, basically a tiny tiny touch to the little door locking pin, it disappears below the door panel and locks. This happens on both the drivers and front passengers doors.

Basically then all the doors have the ability to lock, but for some reason need a bit of assistance, any tips for a newbie Merc Owner, and have a go hero diy mechanic

Thanks in advance

Hi, my experience of vacuum central locking was on 190E (which I think is sort of forerunner of early C's ie similar in many ways). The vac seems to be barely strong enough to overcome a little extra resistance. So if door inner trim is misaligned (happens if it's been removed/refitted or if sunshine over the years lifts the fabric/leather whatever). I found it a nightmare to relocate the trim successfully having removed it for window problem and got myself the locking problem.
The petrol flap on my 190E had same problem (very anoying at the petrol station) and a basic cleanup of the plunger followed by WD40 had it working again fine.
Hope this helps

Sounds like my problem

Cheers Cheapskate,

On closer inspection it looks as though the passenger door trim has been off in the past, as theres a slight rise in the middle. Looks like some jiggery pokery needed to re-align it. Hopefully this will sort the problem, though it'll have to wait til next week as theres the minor event of a Stag do this weekend... in Dublin.

I was gonna attack the fuel cap with the worlds best invention - WD40 in the hope of handy cure, so will let you know how i get on.

However, does anyone know how I can improve the vacuum systems strength... (without replacing it or upgrading it). Theres bound to be someone out there whose came across a similar problem....

Cheers

Yours is a W202. The W123 was the predecessor of the W124 which was predecessor of the W210 E class which was the predecessor of the W211 E class.
