I was reading Haynes manual to do timing on my N Reg C180 Classic but i am a bit confused. Haynes manual says turn the crankshaft pulley to 20 ATDC to match the timing point on the timing cover. I am not experienced mechanic but i would like to learn. So i checked my car and i found some markings on crankshaft pulley but it if a bit confusing. Markings are something like this: ... 3|0 2|0 1|0 O|T 1|0 2|0 3|0 ... and rest of the markings on the pulley weren't clear.

I would like to ask where is the 20 ATDC on this markings. Could anyone give me very basic explanation because i have very small experience about the engine. The reason i am asking i try to change the exhaust camshaft and i messed up the timing so i know it is really dangerous game i am playing i can brake the valves or piston heads but i have to fix this if i can by myself because i could not found any reasonable mobile mercedes specialist to come and do the job car has no tax and insurance. Please give me some advise.

The numbers on the pulley show degrees away from top dead centre (TDC). The line between the digits is the mark that you line up against the pointer. OT is TDC ("on top"), and 20° after TDC is the line in the 2|0 to the left of OT (as you look from the front of the car).

Note also that the timing setting refers to cylinder 1 being on its ignition stroke - which is why the manual tells you to look through the oil filler hole at the inlet (right-hand, as you look from the front of the car) camshaft to see that the valves are closed.

The marks are for 10/20/30degrees before and after Top Dead Centre. You will not see any other timing marks as they are hidden behind covers, DO NOT try to interfere with anything if you don't know what you are doing. Any good mechanic should be able to put it right for you.
It takes a long time to become competent.
Where abouts are you?

Thank you for your advice, I live in London W14 area if anyone knows a good Mercedes specialist can come and do the timing it would be better for me because there is no way i can tow the car at the moment. All i want to do is fix it sell it and buy 124 E or CE series.
